Question for the .41 Mag fans

I have multiple 10mm and 44 magnum handguns. I was at the LGS and looked at a new Ruger Blackhawk. in 41 magnum. I told the LGS owner that I had never shot a 41 magnum and I heard ammo is hard to find. He told me he had a case of Buffalo Bore 41 magnum ammo. I bought the gun and the case of ammo. It is fun to shoot.

A new gun. The .41 will ALMOST match the .44 for full power loads. The .44 210gr loads is equal to .41 210gr. The .44 240 gr is slightly more powerful.

The .41 police load is pleasant shooting and accurate, though unobtanium and basically, reload only.

I have .41, .44 and .45 Colt, Ruger Blackhawk. They are identical, for the most part. Love them all, but I carry the .41 most.

I haven’t shot .41 mag in many years but I always liked the round as a bit of a Goldilocks type thing. I’ve never cared for .44 mag but really enjoyed .41 magnum and found it exceptionally accurate for me. This was a long time ago and I have no real use for it nor do I want to chase an odd caliber but I liked it and did feel like it served a great niche.

I carried a S&W model 58 as a LE sidearm for 13 years. We got into some serious social encounters and it got me home.

One time I fired a round at a fleeing Chevy blazer. The bullet went through the tailgate, the back of the front seat, and stopped in the dashboard radio. Another Patrolman caught the stolen Chevy.

After I got out of the ER, I dug the bullet out of the radio and made a tie tack that I still wear 50 years later.

I also dropped a bull elk with it when one came too close for me to bring my rifle up to a firing position.
The .41 magnum is one heck of a round. I retired that old gun, but it will be one I never part with. My son will get it when I go toes up.

If you never own one ... and if you never cast bullets and reload for one ...
You will never know what you are missing ... They are the unloved , red-headed step children of the Handgun world . The Rodney Dangerfields who don't get no respect .

My avatar model 58 S&W was carried by a Motorcycle Policeman , he patroled alone most of the time and he didn't trust the 38 special the Baton Rouge City Police issued to get him home ...
He wanted a round that would shoot through a car ...and give him a fighting chance .
He carried it for 20 years and retired ... it got him home and through a couple close calls .

It is another obsession-gun. The guns aren’t common and finding factory ammo is no picnic, but it is fun to load for and shoot.

I have three .41’s, a Model 57 4”, a 6.5” Blackhawk and a 7.5” Redhawk. I load my rounds from genuine magnum level down to pleasant target loads arranged in .41 Special cases.

The .41 isn’t my favorite round, but it is a very good one if you want to put forth the effort to make it work for you.

Stay safe.

Id give my left gonad for a 7.5 redhawk in 41 mag. When I visit a gs they always ask what you lookin for? I tell them had a few day well why didn’t you tell me to shut my d@m mouth when ya walked in? Still looking for one thats not a mortgage payment or above. One of these days i’ll be blessed with one until then the hunt continues!

I think you are getting better accuracy. .41 seems to be the same across the board no matter the manufacturer. I've got 2 blackhawks, Dan Wesson with multiple barrels, and 3 S&W N frames in 41 mag. They are all exceptionally accurate if I do my part. I cast and reload for them. Mild to wild. I haven't tried heavy bullets though. 180-220 grains.
My 44 mags are more finicky on ammo and bullet sizing FWIW. If you don't reload I wouldn't bother.

What are you gaining depends on what you might be looking for.
It's a reloader's caliber, if you are into that pursuit. 210-215 grains can be made to go anywhere from 750 FPS to 1400 FPS, depending on what powder you use and what you want to do with it. (Lighter and heavier bullet weights are available also.) The available 41 mag revolver platforms are limited, but very sturdy. If you prefer semi-auto platforms, stick with what you have, the 10mm. If you are not a die-hard 44 mag fan, and enjoy the revolver platform, reload, have some discretionary income, and are curious and patient, then look into 41 mag.

After reading that I almost hate to mention how I got mine.

I would occasionally haunt a police-oriented gun store. One day I went in and a bunch of pristine non-police stuff was in the walls; O/U shotguns, Win 70 7x57, CZ550 in 6.5x55, rimfires rifles, a bunch of handguns, Smiths, Blackhawks and RedHawks including this .41, etc. Apparently some guy got in a domestic violence situation and the Judge ordered him to dispose of his guns as part of his plea deal. He brought them to this place to sell on consignment for attorney bills.

I bought the CZ with a Leupold scope for $550, talked down from the tag price of $750. I looked at the RedHawk, which had a $600 tag on it, but left it as is.

Ten days later I went to pick up my CZ and I saw a couple of shotguns, the Model 70 7x57 and Redhawk were left. I went home with the CZ and the Redhawk was still on my mind.

Two weeks later I went in to buy some Mini14 magazines and the Redhawk was still there. On a whim I asked the manager if the guy would take $250 for it. The guy went in the office, made a call and came back and said the seller will take $350. I countered with $350 OTD, and it was sold. On the way back to my office I ordered a set of Lee dies off Amazon, 250 cases from Starline, bullets from Xtreme and by the time the 10-day wait was up I already had ammo loaded.

I bought a S&W 41 mag in the mid 1980's. Ammunition was as hard to find then as it is now. I could tell little difference from the 44 MAG model 29 I owned then. It was sold rapidly as it had no legitimate purpose.

Being a .41 Mag fan, I will readily admit to being biased.
I have owned ..41, .44 and .45 revolvers and the .44s (3 of them) were sold some years ago.
It eventually came down to a struggle between the .41 Mag and the .45LC, but the LC won out.
Probably something about my 66-year old wrists...
Anyway, no regrets.
I'm happy that I got to own two M-57s, one 6-inch and one 4-inch.
I'm equally happy that I still own a 4-inch M-25.
They are all great revolvers, and you can't go wrong. If you are younger, buy one of each. You will figure out which one you like best. And they are not losing any value, so you will not regret any sane purchase.

Cheapest i’ve found when I actually found one was $1300.00. I’m slightly jealous at how much you paid. I’ll find the right deal. I’m only 40 so lord willing I have 40 more to find my unicorn.
