I recently acquired a side folding stock from a friend who sold his AK style rifle.
I'd like to put this on a MAK 90 which currently has a thumbhole stock. I know I've got to comply with 922.

I know one of the parts I use for compliance will be a pistol grip. What are the easiest parts to change over and ensure the rifle is still reliable?
Have you done the conversion?

Stolen from gunco.net:
The 16 countable parts in a stamped AK with a muzzle device.
(1) Receiver
(2) Barrel*
(3) Trunnion*
(4) Muzzle attachments
(5) Bolt*
(6) Bolt carrier*
(7) Gas piston
(8) Trigger
(9) Hammer
(10) Disconnecter
(11) Buttstock
(12) Pistol grip
(13) Forearm handguards
(14) Magazine body*
(15) Follower
(16) Floorplate
To the best of my knowledge, the 5 parts marked with the * are only available Imported.
No more than 10 of the parts on this list, may be Imported, the rest must be of US mfg.

Easiest parts to replace with US made are

Pistol Grip (should run you $10)
Muzzle device, if yours has one ($10-20)
Fire Control Group, counts as three (Hammer trigger and sear) ($35)
Buttstock (variable, usually a bunch though)
Handguards (Variable, usually a bunch)

All of those items are merely plug and play with taking out the original, and replacing with a new US version.

Any of the parts are available domestically.

Foregrip, pistol grip, buttstock and FCG give you 6 -- although they take a little installation. Not sure if there are any specific issues with the MAK-90, though. You might check on either www.akforum.net or ww.ar15.com -- each have a section dedicated to Chinese variants.

The other "easy" one is the threaded muzzle device (assuming your muzzle is threaded!) You didn't say whether the folding stock was US or not.

TAPCO sells floor plates and followers for magazines, too -- although having to rely on your magazine to make you 922R compliant isn't my favorite way to do it.

Hope this helps,

Jim

All AKs except the Welded in gas pistons on the WASR junk are pinned in place, the hole in the bolt carrier is countersunk on both sides to remove the old pin use an 1/8" drill bit to just cut into the countersink then tap out the rivet, unscrew the gas piston, screw on the new one and drill through the existing hole in the bolt carrier (the stainless USA pistons are not hardened any regular metal bit will cut right through em) install new rivet and hammer both sides flat then dress up with a light file, your done usually takes me bout 2 minutes ea start to finish......

swap out the pistol grip (automatic as your getting rid of a thumbhole)
Swap out front handgaurds
Add a G2 FCG

your now in compliance regardless where the buttstock was made the gas piston is 1 the pistol grip is 1 the handgaurds are 1 the FCG is 3 and your done, ya always wanna avoid having to depend on magazines or mag parts for compliance as its too easy to have the "wrong" mag in the gun...... with the parts above it won't matter the rifle is always legal

the list is way outa date you can currently get everything as USA made except the front trunions, they are made here but not sold retail, this is how the USA made rifles are built from ALL USA parts etc... I frequently swap out bolts and bolt carriers for USA made ones on our accurized AK builds, ALL of the Century built Yugo's have USA Made (Green mountain barrels) barrels and before a couple outfits imported a bunch of virgin Zastava AK barrels we used the same GM barrels they are match grade and very high quality, magazine bodies.......... well the market is flooded with junk USA made mags the imports are still the most reliable ones to use.

FYI-If it's a Euro side folder it may not fit in a MAK-the East German ones won't fit my MAK-90.

Those can be made to fit, by filing or grinding down the part that goes into the back of the reciever.

This is true.

IMHO you might be better off filling in one of the screw holes in the stock
mechanism and re-threading a new hole for a different screw location that
mates with the old stock tang as is.
