So I just ran into this and I never really thought of it before. I was carrying my XD IWB at the movies with my wife. After the movie I had to use the mens room. While in the stall I was thinking...The stall walls dont go to the floor, so anyone in the stalls next to me could see my gun if I drop trow. I removed the holster and held onto it, and then replaced it when done.

Sounds dumb...but what do you do? where do you store your gun when using the mens room for #2?

Joe

I'm not old enough to carry but I know of 2 people that have dropped their pants in a public restroom and their gun fell out and hit the floor. This is scary when you're carrying +1 as they were, but of course it's (hopefully) unlikely to go off. The more pressing issue is if it slides into the next stall. I don't even want to think about having an experience like that when I get my CHL.

Sounds like you did the right thing and is probably what I would do, inconveniencing as it is. Coincidentally I was attacked in a public restroom once.

Hold your pants up to your knees by keeping tension on your pants with outward force created by your knees... make sense?

What he said.

Its just like when you don't want your pants anywhere near the floor at all cause it looks a little dirtier than usual...not that you ever want them to touch, its just that extra precaution. Same thing.

Good holster and belt help with this. I have no troubles with BeltMan belt re-buckled to the loosest setting and a CrossBreed SuperTuck (although it can flop inwards a bit due to the tuckable design).

All I have to do is carefully lower to mid-calf/shin and then place boxers on top.

And yes, this has come up before. A search for "stall" or "toilet" would likely get you in-depth discussion. My position on the matter is that removing your handgun from a holster is a silly way to increase administrative handling while your focus isn't on the firearm. Leave it in the holster (which you did) unless you can devote 100% attention to the safe handling of the bang-stick, or if you actually NEED it.

I know I'm odd, but unless I'm feeling unwell, I don't go #2 in public restrooms.

But if I have to, I go to businesses where I can have the whole room to myself...like Starbucks...or I'll use the Handicapped stall and use the handrails or Baby Changing fold down shelf to keep my gun off the floor

You can find some good threads on this subject with the search function.

This is true as I remember reading about this very problem last fall or so.

I remember that there were quite a few various methods but what I do is to remove my gun from the holster and set it in my underwear. It's protected from prying eyes and you don't forget it on top of the T.P. dispenser.

Perhaps I am odd, but I just take paper towels and lay them over the firearm. I use holsters that are tight so, I don't have to worry about the firearm "falling out" so to speak. people may see it but they are none the wiser...

This is a common question...and a worthwhile question IMO.

I place the pistol down in my pants (mindful of muzzle direction of course), in the crotch area. It cannot fall from there when the pants are down...

Remove it when I'm done with my "business", pull my pants up, button them then put the pistol in the holster. (Sometimes I have to pull my pants up with gun in hand when there is no good place to lay it)

I'm a truck driver...public restrooms are the norm for me.

Pretty much what Ridgerunner665 does. Just very slightly modified. The biggest fear I have is forgetting it. So in the crotch of my jeans is insurance that I won't. Because my bowel movements are unschedualed, public restrooms become a necessity. You people that are out in public must have a real problem holding it until you get home. Or you fertlize a lot of park trees.

Sorry I didn't realize THR was all about BMs.

Part of the reality if carrying a gun day in and day out. Sometimes you gotta go to the bathroom, sometimes stranger things happen.

Best to have a plan before you are standing in the middle of it I suspect :)

Since we're revealing deep personal secrets, I sort of make a "hammock" out of my underwear while I'm sitting doing business and place the handgun there. Chance of dropping it I think but there aren't a lot of choices. I fear putting it on a shelf or hanging on a hook because I worry I would for some strange reason forget to retrieve it.

I keep the holster and belt line up a bit higher than the bottom of the wall (so the holster isn't seen), and take the gun out of the holster and put it in the crotch of my pants in front of me. Easy access if intruded upon, and I won't forget it behind the toilet, etc (I actually know of an incident where a cop did that, only to find the gun gone when he returned for it a minute later). Everyone has to find their own solution, but this one works for me.

+1 for pocket carry. I know not everyone does this, but it works fro me.

I've got a friend that carries a Para .45acp double-stack, an HK P7M8 and four extra mags. I'm guessing he doesn't use a public restroom very often.

And I'm guessing he walks funny also.

Anyways, seems like a problem easily remedied and never solved. You don't think about this stuff while shopping for a carry gun.

I carried three guns and had to use a public restroom once - no issues, using some of the techniques listed above. As I discovered to my horror mnay moons ago, if you DO set it off body, be careful where you set it, as the standard looking tank top I thought was a good location turned out to be slightly tilted and slick as oiled glass...and when I turned around, my P01 with Crimson Trace Lasergrips went PLOP! Unused water, thankfully...took three days for the laser to dry out, has worked perfectly ever since then.

I'm more concerned about picking up something nasty from the toilet seat and surrounding area than the safety of the firearm lol.

It's been years for me since I have used a public restroom other than to urinate.

Just try to not poop in public.
