I don't know a lot about BP shooting, I've only had 2, an 1861 navy that blew the barrel off the first time I fired it and an 1856 Remington. Both are CVA replicas. My problem is that I can't find any spare parts. I've noticed the references to Traditions, did this company take over CVA’s handguns. I would like to get a couple of spare cylinders for the 1858, not conversion cylinders as mine has a brass frame. I assume that cylinders from different manufactures are not interchangeable. Am I wrong on that assumption?

Any guidance from this immense pool of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks messerist for the lead but they only had conversion cylinders and no CVA at all. I'm looking for CVA parts, specifically a spare black powder cylinder. I also have a lead on a CVA 1858 that has been damaged for $25.

4. Do you still sell or repair blackpowder revolvers like the Colt Navy or the Remington Army? Answer: No, all remaining parts for these models were sold to Deer Creek Products. You can contact them at 765-525-6181.

From the FAQ on CVA's website.

CVA is/was an importer, not a manufacturer. Looking for 'CVA parts' greatly limits the field of available items. Yes, Deer Creek Products at the number you were given did purchase the remaining parts inventory when CVA was acquired by Blackpowder Products, Inc. and ceased marketing replica bp firearms. They (and only they) may have the parts you are seeking. However, they didn't make them; they were made in Italy or Spain. Your gun should have proof marks identifying the country of origin and manufacturer's marks identifying the company that produced it. These marks will lead you to the proper source for parts for your gun should Deer Creek not have them.

Here is a link to decode the proof marks.

Kplumly,
Were you shooting smokeless powder in the '61 Navy that blew off the barrel? I've never heard of such a thing with BP unless there was a metal defect.

Look on the frame or barrel (also check under the rammer) for symbols or letters indication the maker:
ASM= Armi San Marco
SM= San Marco
DGG inside a circle= Euroarms
"U" inside an octagon= Uberti
a diamond with FAP inside= Pietta

Various distributors like CVA, Traditions, dixie Gun works, Replica Arms etc purchased various guns from various makers over time so some years the guns were ASM and later Pietta, Uberti, etc. from the same importer/distributor. The parts need to match the maker of the gun to be less trouble fitting them.

Thanks! I found a diamond with FAP inside. That should get me closer to the spare cylinder.

Now that you know your's is a Pietta... Cabela's has spare cylinders for $40/ea. A call should confirm it's a Pietta cylinder. The next question is... will it need fitting?
