it followed me home !!!

So, there I was today, minding my own damnable business as my buddy and I were nosing around a local pawn/gun shop. He was lookin' for a factory crimp die for .30-06 so we could load some rounds up today. I was gonna load some up for my bolt action and he was gonna load some up for his auto-loader.

THEN... it happened !!! Sitting in the case is this gorgeous little puppy, starin' at me !!! A Pietta 1858 in .44, steel frame, round brass trigger guard with an 8" barrel in blued. AND... a spare cylinder to boot !!

Well... the asking price was $190, but I was able to get 'em to part with it for $180 instead. Since the Traditions catalog lists the spare cylinder at $68 plus shipping... I was rather pleased with the notion of finding it at this price.

Now... my question for you is this... does a spare cylinder have to be fitted to a specific gun, or will it work on any 1858 in .44? Reason I ask is... the end of next week I should be receiving my 1858 Bison (Pietta .44). Will it interchange between the two? If so... I'm really gonna be pleased with this find. :D

My spare cylinder that came with my Uberti twins fits both no problem. Including nice tight lockup. But I'm not sure if it's an orginal Uberti cylinder or one of the aftermarket ones. But the major point here is that the fit of the cylinder doesn't seem to be an idvidual gun sort of thing so likely you'll find that it fits just fine.

BCRider is correct - it may fit or it may take a little effort. You need to assume that some minor fitting will be necessary, and if it isn't, well, a little extra frosting on that cake.

That's assuming, of course, that the cylinder is the same brand as the gun; if they're different brands fitting will absolutely be necessary and it's even likely they can't be made to fit without major effort.

If both are Pietta revolvers you should be good to go. I bought a pair of Pietta spare cylinders and they fit my Pietta 1858 Target, 1858 Shooters model and a Navy Arms nickle 1858. The Navy Arms is a smaller grip frame than the Pietta's, but same cylinder length. Timing is spot on with all three revolvers. All three of these have slightly different frames but cylinder length is within .001 on all three. Maybe I just got lucky.

Forgot to add, Congrats on the new toy, the 1858's are a blast and many variations so the collection can grow.

I have 3 spare cylinders for my lil Pietta NMA w/ 5.5" barrel & they all will fit the more recent manufactured Pietta NMA's " 5-6 years ago or less" but my 24 year old NMA has narrower bolt stops than my 1.5 year old so my cylinders will not work in my older Pietta.

Thanks all....

just exactly what I was hoping to hear... and as soon as the Bison arrives, will give it a whirl and confirm it (had every intention of doing so anywho).

Well... about the only thing I can find "wrong" with it is... some people just don't know how to avoid puting that ring on the cylinders when tinkerin' with a fine piece of machinery.

Gentlemen... I present to you the ballistic missle revolver, 1858 New Army in 8".

Yeah... I had to sneak in a peek at my longbow I finished making... still need to put the hair rest pads on it. After shooting it for about half an hour... it chrono'd out at 188 fps with a B-50 string. I couldn't be more pleased with it.

That's a beauty!
I have a feeling that great deal is a "Thank You" in exchange for making such a fine pair of show chaps for a certain young lady! :D  :D :)

Thanks... but, Nope...

no connection with those chaps... unless you consider "karma" following me.

I must say... I really like the feel of this one in my paw... it feels rather light and nimble compared to the Walker. I have a feeling that the collection is just getting started too.

The light reflection does kinda hide 'em....

the grips do have some very nice grain... almost a tiger stripe appearance to 'em.

The other shop I was at yesterday had a very nice ROA in what appeared to me to be stainless and the ivory lookin' grips on it. They wanted $579 for it. They also have a Walker which they want $369 for.

Another piece I started slobbering over was an LAR Grizzly in .45WinMag... but, $1500 was a little more than I had to spend on a whim yesterday. :banghead:

Thankee BBG...

I'm havin' a ball with the old school stuff, whether noisy or whisper quiet.

Now I've gotta make me a cross-draw rig for this'n, my Walker, and my SuperBlackHawk.

Loaded up 100 rnds. for the SBH yesterday. 7.5 gr. of Hogdon Universal and 240 gr. semi-wadcutter solid lead in .431" diameter. My buddy's got a Lee Classic loader and I've been gathering up all the dies and turrets for getting a number of my toys ready for some handloads. I like that one so much, I'm gonna get myself one before too long.

Looking at your pictures makes me want to go out for some range time and learn more about shooting my own 1858's.

Congrats on a pretty decent score on this deal.

Oldfalguy, my own grips are pretty plain and I was already looking at the brass bushings and thinking about making some grips from something more "interesting". If I'm going to do a few I may as well do a few more. But it won't happen until the Fall I suspect.
