Question on load data..

OK, according to this load data, directly off of hodgdons site The recipe is:
165 Sierra Game king,
43 gr. H4895
Expected velocity of 2600 fps

and here is the question

Is that COL for the max load or the minimum? My chamber is tight and wont support that coal.. max of 2.672 for that bullet in my chamber..

the real answer is the COAL really depends on two things.. the ogive of the bullet, and the magazine.

You could conceivably have two bullets, both the same weight, seated to the same COAL, one would chamber but the other will not because one bullet is fatter further towards the tip.

The other would be, how much room in the magazine you have. Too long of a COAL will not allow the cartridge to fit in the mag well.

Soooooo.. your solution would be; You know what the OAL needs to be to function in the rifle. So back the data off 10% to start with, and work the load up from there until the rifle likes it.

243winxb is right you have load data for 30-06 but your measurement for your chamber sounds like 308?

The cartridges are next to each other maybe clicked the wrong one?

COAL for .308 is 2.75"

I agree you are using 30-06 Starting load data.
Hopefully that is what you are trying to reload?

Neither one.
It is the COL the data was tested at in Hodgdons pressure test barrel.

You can go in or out, up or down, or whatever.

Thats why you always start at the recommended Starting load, and work up in YOUR rifle.

At the suggested starting load you are using, seating depth has no bearing on pressure or safety.

43gr is the starter for the 30-06 using H4895. Both my Lee manual and the Hodgdon website confirm this. They both also list 3.30" as the lenght.. which is why I was so confused.

THis does overlap with .308 win, where 43.5 is max (in standard brass.. you run 43 in the LC match I use and you're running compressed loads).

I looked at IMR 4895 loads. My mistake. Maximum COL is 3.340" to a minimum of 2.940" This is measured on the bullet nose, not the ogive. The ogive measurement would be shorter. See the SAAMI drawing > http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Rifle/30-06%20Springfield.pdf When using the starting load, COL is not a problem. Work up as always.

The only time you really need to consider seating depth in regard to it's effect on pressures, is when you get real close to, or are, touching the lands. Handgun pressures are of course a different story, and are very responsive to seating depth variations in most cartridges, especially AL types.
