I have some IMR PB and Rainier 9mm 115gr plated HP bullets. As you probably know, Rainier states on their website that reloaders should use data for lead bullets. I have three manuals but none of them have a recipe for a lead HP.
The Hodgdon site has data for a lead RN.

Bullet Wt (Gr.) Mfg Powder Bullet Diam. C.O.L. Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure Grs. Vel. (ft/s) Pressure
115 GR. LRN IMR PB .356" 1.100" 3.3 974 26,900 PSI 3.7 1061 32,500 PSI

Do you think it is safe to start loading the HP at 3.3gr and 1.100" COAL?

I'd make up a dummy round just to make sure that the COL was right for my gun, but other than that you should be fine.

It is all about the bearing surface, the part of the bullet that actually touches the bore. Bullets made from the same material with the same bearing surface can be loaded alike.

The nose of a bullet that touches nothing has no effect on loading.
If the cartridge will fit the magazine and chamber it should be fine.

Thanks for the replies. COL should not be a problem as I have shot other 1.100" RN ammo from this gun. But I will test it.

I think the issue that is stuck in the back of my mind is this - I have a RN bullet that is seated to 1.100" COL. OK all is good. Now I take a HP bullet which is a little shorter than the RN and I seat it to 1.100". Haven't I actually seated the bullet just a tad deeper in the case and would therefore raise pressure? Or am I being overly cautious?

Nevermind. If the HP is shorter than the RN and I seat them both to the same COL, the RN would actually be deeper in the case.
