Question on Ruger

I am interested in a Ruger No. 1 Single Shot in 45-70 caliber. Will this rifle be able to digest .45 Long Colt pistol ammunition in addition to 45-70 rifle ammunition? Thanks...

I don't see how. A 45-70 case, as well as its base, is quite a bit larger in diameter than a 45 Colt. Besides, the base of a 45-70 is thicker than a 45 Colt, let alone the fact that a 45-70 uses .458" diameter bullets while 45 Colt bullets are typically .451" or .452".

Often the best was to answer these questions is to buy a reloading manual. Even if you don't reload, they have all kinds of wonderful info, including things like cartridge dimensions that would make clear answers to questions like these.

No on the 45 colt
I don't think anyone should consider buying any 45/70 unless they reload. This goes double for the Ruger #1 as the standard factory loads are very light vs what the #1 will safely handle and the semi custom heavy loads are hard to find and very expensive. The 45/70 is one of the most cost effective calibers to reload for as even the standard factory ammo is fairly expensive .

Most guns/barrels that will chamber .454 Cassul will fire .45 Colt and .45 S&W Schofield. Guns/barrels designed for .45 Colt will fire .45 S&W Schofield. Thompson Center is the easiest to change barrels, or change from a handgun configuration to rifle.

Freedom Arms revolvers designed for .454 Cassul can be purchased with extra cylinders for .45 Colt (recommended because the FA barrel throat is much narrower than other brands) and for .45 ACP, but this is quite expensive. Ruger single action revolvers are often available with more than one cylinder. My Ruger Blackhawk has both .45 Colt and .45 ACP, and is quite accurate for a mass-produced gun.

Sir, you have made an exellent choice! I have a Ruger #1 in 45/70 and it is a very versatile, fun gun. Good plinking loads, 'thumper' loads for regular hunting demands and 'serious' game loads are all available.

The 'fun' loads are a 'boom'-wait-wait-wait-'thump' kind of fun and you can go all the way up to whatever you can stand to pull the trigger on! I have taken deer and hogs with mine and, to say the least, it WORKS!
