Anyone have any tips on getting the OEM floorplate off a Glock mag (i.e., to install a GAP floorplate, Pearce grip extension, etc.)? Once I push the mag follower up, I can't seem to get them past the little tabs on the sides of the mag. :banghead:

Thanks in advance for helping this noob out...

Sometimes you will have a hard time squeezing it enough to slide out the baseplate. I like to use a vise to get it there much easier

squeeze the sides where the little tabs are at the base. it was a real pain on mine too, but it'll give with a little work.

still have no clue why glock feels the need to include those little tabs....

Use a vise to hold the bag body. Use a punch to push in the retaining tab on the baseplate. Use another punch (preferably plastic or wood) and a mallet to tap the baseplate off.

They are to prevent the base plate from sliding off if bumped/dropped and dumping all your cartridges.

It is a fairly common failure. This feature is one of the reasons Glock mags are one of the best pistol magazine designs in history. If you really don't like them, you can shave them off with a razor.

I always used an appropriately sized screwdriver, and then use it to push the tab out of the way, and then use it as a lever to force the baseplate off.

Thye don't look pretty afterwards, and I've broken a screwdriver doing it once, but it works and they are really no worse for wear afterwards, except in looks.

hmmm i know it's better to have them, but it sure can make spring changes a pain in the ass lol

You can go to the hardware store and buy one of those little C-clamps. Those are reported to work really well on Glock mags.

Any suggestions to make mine drop free full and empty? Some will, some won't.

I just installed 2 of the grip extensions on magazines for a Glock 26. I found using vice grips on the body of the magazine and a nail set to depress the plunger works pretty well. However, a word of caution, I set out to install these extensions on 3 magazines...I managed to break the (internal) floor plate pushing in on it with the nail set...lesson learned; don't push too hard on the floor plate, just far enough to get the plate sliding

The problem lies in those pointless, agonizing little tabs. My solution is to take a small, thin screwdriver to lightly pry the tabs away from the mag body so I can pull the floor plate forward. I've also stuck two screwdrivers in the side before.

I've tried the whole "squeeze the side thing." It is BS. I couldn't get it to work, and I don't want to put it into a vise because I worry about misshaping the magazine. I wish glock would stop using the floor plate tabs. Hundreds of other manufacturers don't use them and their magazines work fine, and come off 5x as easy. Oh well, what can you do?

Maybe I ought to just sand them off.

My mags have always dropped free (2nd and 3rd gen.).

the old glock mags without the metal liners would tend to bulge and not drop free. do you have these old ones?
They're all the new-type, metal lined, "drop free" mags. Someone in this thread

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=517126

claims that Glock never said any of its mags were "drop free". What I can't figure out is why some will and some won't, when they look to be identical.

This is out of a G22, G23 and G30.

all the new ones should drop free especially when empty.

odd that it only happens with some of them. maybe they're warped?

hmmm....or maybe replace you mag release spring. it's like $2.

that's all i can think of, unless reaper has another suggestion. he's prob out plowing the potato fields right now. he'll be back soon though.

^^^that rules out the mag spring. call glock and see if they'll replace the suspect mags under warranty. their cust serv isn't the greatest (i've dealt with them), but if you get the right guy on the phone, it'll work.

^^^aww got the raw deal. hopefully you didn't pay too much.

it's still worth a try to call glock, even if they are second hand. it's hit or miss with them, so it could be a hit. worst they can do is say "no mags for you!". lol

No, sorry. It is a crap shoot with Glock mags as they are not designed to drop free.

WOW! I really was out planting corn in my garden. Stop stereotyping.

Why would the mag release spring make a difference?
It doesn't.

LOL I dare him to call Glock USA and ask about "drop-free" mags! If he gets the right guy on the phone he will freak out and tell him "We don't make drop-free mags! Stop believing what you read on that damn internet!"

worst they can do is say "no mags for you!".
OP you got to call and try.

meh... I bought most of them second hand anyway.
Do it.
