Dear friends, I have a SS S&W model 36 round butt and I'm looking for grip options. Is this puppy considered a K or J frame? If so, I can put a set or Hogue Bantam grips on her.
Please see pic below...
Thanks

J frame.

As for grips, I've tried Houge revolver grips. They're now sitting in the box they came in.

As others have said; its a Nickel plated Square Butt J frame.

Personally, I'd just add a BK grip adapter or a Tyler T grip.

Like on my m10 below

Beautiful gun you have there BTW!

I have a set of Compac's on a holster J Frame square butt { Model 63 }, I prefer them over any others. But for concealed carry some people claim the are " sticky " and when you bend over and your outer garment rides up, it will hang up, because of the material used in the grips. Don't know myself because I only use them on holster carry.

I carried one for years with the standard grips, just as pictured. For control in DA firing, the hand needs to have a full grip and the kind that allows only two fingers on the gun just won't hack it.

Another vote for a Tyler T-Grip adapter, preferably a polished aluminum one to go with the nickel plating on your J frame.

If you want rubber grips,,,

If you want rubber grips,,,
I tried Pachmayer "Compac" grips,,,
As far as "galoshes" go these fit my hand nicely.

The pistol on the right is a S&W J-frame like yours,,,
It's chambered for .22 LR but is identical in size to your Model 36.

Pachmayer offers them for either the round-butt or square-butt guns,,,
Your gun is a square-butt version.

The bonus factor of the Compac grips is the fact that,,,
Their exterior dimensions are exactly the same for the round or square butt versions.

This means that my square butt Model 34 snubbie,,,
Has the exact same feel as my round butt Model 36 snubbie.

Anyways, give them a look-see,,,
I like them a lot.

I have some old Sile wood grips on my 31-1. It's a 3" J frame just like yours.
Well, except that mine is .32 S&W Long, instead of .38 Special.
I like them but I may put Compacs on it.
I've had a few revolvers with Compacs and love them.

Nice Smiths, everyone. Now, I'm jealous.

Even though they feel right in my hand, The Pachmayr Compaq grips are heavy...turning a light gun into a slightly heavier light gun.

I also like this style of Herrett's wooden grips but only have this one set on a S&W model 36-2 J-frame. I look often for another set or two but have no luck. :scrutiny:

Badger grips

If your not too worried about price,AND want something that is nice looking and functional.

Look up Badger grips.

I have a few pair of his for different revolvers, nice stuff

You guys have given me several great options. I'm doing lots research because I believe this great American classic deserves a good grip.

Here's my Smith M36 with an early set of Smith grips. A good carry combination; great control on the gun, and good concealability as well. Suited up this way, it's been my daily companion for over twenty years....except when my wife has it!!

Best Regards, Rod
