When I received my P228 as a gift, the rear sight seemed to be right in the middle. It also seemed to shoot essentially point of aim.

Recently, I decided to install some night sights where the rear sight was slightly to the left (posted a thread on this I believe). I took it to the range and managed to shoot some pretty good groups (holes were almost touching) that were slightly low and to the left. In shooting a P229 that I had borrowed from a friend that's rear sights were dead center, I was able to shoot straight.

If the factory sights are centered, should the night sights be the same?

The gunsmith showed me how he zeroed it, and according to the machine he was using, the front sight was lined up with the off-center rear sight. Still, I'm not so sure. I had him move them center for now and he told me to bring it back if it was off.

I want to try it out but sadly it's rather expensive as of now for me to do so constantly. I'll definitely try to shoot it soon, but for now does anybody have any experiences with this?

Yes, if the factory sights are shooting to POA. I've installed Meprolight and Trijicon night sights on three SIGs and centered both the front and rear sights on all of them and they all shoot to POA. I use a pair of digital calipers to center both the front and rear sights i.e. I measure the distance from a reference point on the slide to either side of the sights and adjust using the SIG sight installation tool. The fact that you're shooting left with the rear sight offset to the left is consistent since you move the rear sight in the direction you want the point of impact to move. So if you move the rear sight to the right, your POI will move right. Is the new front sight the same height as the original sight? You're shooting slightly lower so the front site may be slightly taller.

My impression is that the night sights are a little bit higher up. They're the Trijicon ones if that means anything.

if their numbers are the same (on the sights)...they should be the same but different loads in a specific caliber can affect POA/POI...Trijicon is an OE supplier of sights to SiG so if the sights are made for your model, they should be spot on...

Meprolight makes the night sights for SIG ... I have three SIGs with factory night sights and they're all made by Meprolight. Meprolight also makes the night sights for Kimber.

I would hive it some time before adjusting it. Strong side light can throw the shots off for windage, and if you're not completely in tune with the trigger, that can throw it off in both directions as well.

The sight tool should have witness marks on it that allow you to center the sights in the slide. Its easy and straight forward.

I have a MGW sight tool that looks just like the factory SIG tool, and Ive installed a number of different sets of night sights on my guns. Ive only ever had one gun (a P6) that wasnt "zeroed" the first time I took it out, and it was only slightly off.

As far as the gun shooting low with the night sights, all of my guns so equipped, shoot to the "dots" not the traditional blade and notch sight picture.

yes but before Meprolight, Trijicon made the night sights (...and were the original SiG Lights) for SiG and some say are making them for them again...Trijicon knows how to make night sights for SiGs...

I had to get my front site put back on my P226 because it became loose while I was shooting (kind of upsetting). After I initially had it put back on, it shot a little left, about 2.5-3 inches. I took it back to my smith with a bench rested 7 yard target and explained the predicament. Luckily, he was able to re-adjust it and now it shoots dead on.
