Questions about H&R Pardner Single

I have hunted HARD with my NEF 12ga for 20 years. Clean & Oil is all it has ever needed. The blue is starting to wear but I won't complain about that considering all the use I have got out of it.

One down side to most of the older single shots is that they commonly came with a fixed full choke. That's fine for long range shooting but is a drawback for most small game hunting. The tight pattern makes it harder to hit things at close range, and when you do it turns the game into hamburger.

Years ago I had one very similar to the one pictured but cut it down to 20" to eliminate the choke. Opened up the pattern lots and made it a much better brush gun.

I could do most of my hunting with a fixed modified choke just fine, so long as it was steel shot compatible. My H&R 10 uses BPS10 gauge invector screw in chokes. I have a modified on it. It came with an extra full turkey choke I'll probably never use since I don't turkey hunt.

I was surprised how fast you can get a single shot to function.

All that aside, I love the pardner 12 gauges. This one has been around for a while.

I like your vintage, with the schnabel and the color casehardening.

They tend to last forever. When they break, it's because they're subjected to ridiculous levels of abuse and neglect. Even then, they tend to last.

They are popular for dog training and hunt testing, where they are used precisely because they're cheap. People buy them because they don't want to mess up their nice guns, or bother with gun maintenance.

That means they tend to get wet, and they don't tend to be cleaned or oiled, and often just live on the floor of a truck or shed. I've seen some that are shamefully trashed -- but they still worked perfectly.:)

I really don't need another single shot than my 10. I also have a 16, an old Iver Johnson built gun stamped "Hercules" on the receiver. It's still tight and still a shooter, but it's choked full, only downer. Be a good general purpose woods gun if I didn't have others I prefer.
