So I have been reading as much as I can on the NYC gun laws since I might be moving there next year and I still have a few questions. I have found conflicting write ups and some are just not really answered.

1. Is there a length of time I must be living in the city before I can apply for my license?

2. I read that I need references but when I went through the application there was no spot to input the information. Do I need them and are there special requirements of them as well?

3. Is there a carry license for a private citizen that would allow me to carry my handgun concealed throughout the city? The Special carry seems to be only businesses and the Premises carry seems to be the silliest thing I've ever heard.

I'm sure I have more questions but my anger and frustration over these laws is somewhat blinding.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You don't really need to trouble yourself with these questions. The chance of obtaining a reasonably unrestricted permit to carry a handgun in New York City is very, very close to zero, unless you have compromising pictures of the mayor with underaged farm animals.

Do you have to live in New York City? NYC and gun rights do not go together. If you must live close to NYC and still want something resembling gun rights. Try Connecticut, chances are better to get a CCW license there...although it will not be good in New York City.

Upstate NY might be possible to get a concealed carry permit in certain counties, but that is not valid in New York City. Forget NJ as it is impossible to get a carry permit in that state for ordinary citizens. Your other options to carry in NYC is limited to , becoming a NYC cop, start a business that deals with a lot of cash, become a security guard (although that means you are restricted to carrying on duty). For more information on NY and firearms try the nyfirearms site.

You need to prove residency in NYC, utility bill in your name plus any other proof of address. You must prove you are a US citizen or legal resident alien.

The reference letters are added to your application not part of it.

To get an unlimited carry you will have to prove need. Either your life is in specific danger or you have a business that requires you to carry large amounts of cash/jewelry. Other than that you'll have to make due with a premise license

Pretty much THE answer to all NYC gun questions is:

NO

Actually, it's more like HELL NO!

get a neutered ar-15, as i understand it's legal in nyc?
handgun don't even bother

Unfortunately NYC forbids Ar15/M4/M16 variants neutered or otherwise. Actually easier to get a handgun in NYC than EBRs

Awesome, so it's exactly as I thought.

Midwest - I have been all over that site five or six times. To a degree it raises more questions than it answers.

ns66 - I'll check that page out, I don't think I've found that one. As if I need more info to anger me to no end.

The pistol permit page has a lot of information and check the NY State Conceal Carry Map. It shows the counties in NY state where carry permits are likely to be issued. Just be aware that no matter where you go in NY. The wait for a permit could be more than the 'standard' six months, one person had to wait 13 months for permit!

First, you join the NYPD, then you join the MOB.

Your constitutional rights are then protected.

And that my friends is how it works.

In terms of a handgun - either get an attorney or don't bother trying.
I've made the decision to stay away from that sociopolitically disgusting city for a number of reasons - but the near-total prohibition of human rights is the biggest one.

You already have a permit. The constitution (bill of rights), and those that don't abide by it are the guilty ones. I have a copy of my permit in my wallet, and whenever I feel oppressed by the silver tongues, I take it out and read Ammendment #2......without infringement.

Thanks doom, I wanted to start looking into getting a lawyer for piece of mind.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, and if you are caught with a handgun in NYC you can read that over and over to yourself in your 6 x 8.

I'm glad you brought that up, that is a possibility.

They feed off our fear of disobeying their infringements. Being able to defend myself and my family is worth the risk. I would die inside if something ever happened to my family because I feared one of their unconstitutional laws. To me the 6X8 is the lesser of the two fears.

It's not very likely the police will be there before the crime happens.
