I'll be buying (or ordering) my first .204 in a few days. It'll be a Remington 700 with a 26" bull-barrel, and I'll be putting it on an H-S Precision or Bell & Carlson stock. That much is firm. Some questions I'd like to ask you about these guns are:

1) Do the VLS and the SPS Varmint, have the same action and barrel or not?
2) If there are differences in the action and barrel, what are they?
3) Are there other differences in these rifles aside from the stock?
4) Is the 1:12 twist fast enough to stabilize the heavier .204 rounds (40-45 grain)?

Thanks for your help.

SPS = Special Purpose Synthetic
VLS = Varmint Laminated Stock

I assume you mean .223 caliber using .224 diameter bullets?

The actions are the same, the difference is the stock. The VLS has a 26" heavy contour barrel. The SPS has the same barrel.

Is the 1:12 twist fast enough to stabilize the heavier .204 rounds (40-45 grain)?

The 1:12 twist id designed to stabilize the lighter 40 to 55 grain bullets. In .224 bullets these are light. Still not sure about this .204 bullet you mention?

Model 700 VLS

Model 700 SPS

Unless you are talking about the 204 Ruger in which case still yes the twist will stabilize the popular 26 to 50 grain bullets.

The actions are the same. Barrel diameter might be somewhat different but if you order a stock for a heavy barrel it should work. If the barrel is a little thicker than the stock inlet it is easy enough to open it up a little. If the barrel is a little thinner it won't hurt to have a generous free float.

Can't help with barrel twist. Don't know enough about the 204 chambering.
