Ok, we know that they issue SVD Dragunovs to one soldier per squad. Right?

Well, a while ago I saw pictures of some RPK-74 gunners with scopes on them. I heard that they were using them as squad marksman rifles because of their 23 inch barrels and flat shooting, high velocity 5.45mm rounds. Can any one confirm that this is what the Russians are actually doing? Or was it just a rumor?

I know here in the States, I believe the Marines use the SPR (Mk 12 Navy designation) in 5.56 as a marksman rifle. We use a 77 grain bullet I think? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Second question, if we are using assault rifle cartridges for marksman use and the Russians may be using RPK-74 5.45mm as a marksman rifle, and now we see the Chinese sporting their own 5.8mm Bulpup marksman rifle, what's the point of huge full caliber cartridges like the 308 and 7.62x54R? Even the Iraqis had a 20 inch barrel AK called the "Tabuk" that was used as a marksman rifle in 7.62x39mm.
