questions about shooting 38 in 357 for ccw?

i will be getting a ruger sp101 in mid March or the 2nd week of april, it will be my hd gun and ccw gun when i get my licence. i know you can shoot 38 out of the 357. i have read that the 38 leaves a ring after shooting a good amount.

now since it 2will be my only gun because i will be getting rifle and will be selling my taurus 24\7 to my friend.

should i get a 38 sp101 or 357 sp101?

the reason i ask is the ring that bad after shooting the 38s? or get the 357 and shoot both rounds and then clean it?

As Standing Wolf says, just clean it after but get the Magnum in case you want it someday.

I have a 386PD and it's a bit painful with Magnum loads so when I carry it I use Special +P Nyclads.

I can always move up if I want to though.

thanks, i will be getting the sp101 in 357.

sorry i got another question. i have a hopps cleaning kit. that is what i use to clean my taurus 9mm. can i still use the same equipment for the sp101?

the kit comes with some bore brushes, patches, lube, hoppes no#9 solvent( i think that is what it is called) can i use it or is there something else i need for the sp101.

for my b-day i told my friends to buy me ammo instead of gifts. i mean the ammo will replace the gifts they were going to get me. so i will be getting about 150-200rds of 38 specials.

Don't need any extra cleaning supplies really, just a .357 cleaning brush, jag, and mop. Whatever you like to use for cleaning. I like brushes and mops.

The same brushes/jags/what not that work for the 9mm will work for the .357. There is 0.002" difference in bore diameter between the two. IOW, the brush is the same size for 9 or .38.

I bought a little handgun cleaning rod at Wallyworld some years ago, they still have 'em I've noticed. It's only four or five bucks, the rod stores in the handle and it comes with a jag and .22/.38-9mm/.40/.45 brushes. It's a handy little rig that'll fit in a pocket.

I use the same cleaning setup for all my centerfire guns: .38 special, .357 magnum, and 9mm. Only thing different for my .22s is smaller patches and a smaller bore brush.
