In the land of make believe.
Suggestions for hot weather carry. I am looking into moving to Florida for the summer to work with a friend and his uncle. I plan on getting my Florida permit and carrying down there. The type of work we may be doing is general labor and installation of Air Conditioning and pools.

I was just curious as to suggestions on how to carry. I wear a lot of football jerseys. I literally have about 20 jerseys in my closet. And I want to be able to carry in them. I figure a tucked T-shirt and the jersey over that.

But any other decent cover garments would be appreciated. I am a college student so nothing to fancy. I was thinking along the lines of Guyabarra shirts.

And shorts as well. I currently wear Khakis like their is no tomorrow but I want something that will be more comfy in hot weather.

Cargo shorts w/ roomy front pockets (Wranger cargo/carpenter) to house a keltec p3at. Also, cargo shorts from American Eagle Outfitters (super roomy) can be had at Bealle's Factory outlets for a bout 8 bux.
A jersey will probably cover most any handgun carried iwb, and something as short as a g26 owb in a high ride belt rig. (I use a Galco Matrix with an untucked polo or barber shop style button down.)

Don't bother trying to carry if you are installing AC- Those attics are too hot- you'll cook a round off in you pants up there in summer- good luck with that job.

Maybe one of those synthetic sweat-wicking shirts would be best to wear as a base garment. Under-Armor is a well known brand, but expensive (you can get similar things at Wal-Mart and Target). Then a loose fitting shirt over everything, but if you are doing general labor, you'll be destroying any shirt you use as a cover garment, and anything larger than a snubby revolver worn outside the waistband will likely become too heavy and troublesome by the time you break for lunch.

look up www.comp-tac.com for info on the P3AT neck holster they have. I have seen guys wear this and it is pretty neat. It don't dig into your hip and still pretty accessible if need be.

+1 to those who recommend Under Armour as a base layer. That was a lifesaver during last summer's heat here in Houston. I also have a pair of those Wrangler carpenter shorts, and they tend to sometimes chafe. A good dose of baby powder will help with that. AND, if you are going to wear IWB in the heat, don't forget preventative maintenance. Make sure you keep the gun lightly oiled and free of moisture. Spot rust will show up in the most unlikely places. You might think of keeping a pre-soaked rag handy after day's end.

Stay cool!

IWB rig with SWEAT SHIELD. You will need that. Get your sidearm refinished in something really durable. Or just buy a CZ with polycoat...:neener:
Really big t-shirts in random patterns are a great help. Think WalMart camo t-shirt sale - cheap, good disruptive pattern hides any bulges, and if you ruin them working, who cares?

The gun I would be carrying is a P2000sk in .40S&W. I was thinking about purchasing a whole bunch of those underarmour shirts.

You mean it can get so hot that rounds will cook off in an attic?

No, the heat an attic generates won't cook rounds off . . .

Milt Sparks makes two models of IWB holsters with a waterproof layer sewn in between. I have one for my Commander. I think IWB holsters are too uncomfortable for me and my needs though, so I only use an OWB holster nowadays.

www.bulletproofme.com stocks some T-shirts designed to be worn under body armor. I have a couple, and they really do work. $14, if I recall . . .

i would suggest against iwb holsters during hot working days it could get quite uncomfortable, maybe not for you but that is teh fact for me. and untucked shirt covers my kahr k-40 in a black leather don hume open top paddle just fine. and i can wear it all day and it os comfortable.

If you are a contractor, something to think about. What ever you carry make sure it's concealed, no one carries a gun in my house including myself. If I have someone working in my house and I see a gun , then they are not going to finish the job. Once I had a job that required going into homes and siting down and visiting. I carried, but it was a mouse gun ( NAA and KEL-TEC wasn't around then) and it was under deep concealment. If at any time one of my host became aware I was carrying I would probably lost my job. Why did I carry? because of some of the neighborhoods I had to drive in, well, lets just say they were interesting.:) BTW I live in Arizona and heat I know.

Don't Forget the Spare Mags

I live in Orlando, I have much more trouble with the humidity as it rusts my spare mags than I have had with my Beretta.

I carry a Glock 27 OWB in a Galco Combat Master here in South Florida.

works for me. Just throw a polo or other shirt over it and nobody seems to notice.

I normally go for a belly strap with a slim Kahr P9. It won't show under a T-shirt most of the time. Since you are working, a belly strap may not be the best. Pocket gun may be the most convienent.

Kel-Tec P-3AT in a SmartCarry.
No one will know you're carrying, and better still, you'll forget you're carrying it yourself. You'll be able to crawl around all you want and won't lose your gun or even snag it on something.

The SmartCarry has special moisture resistant material on the back side and the rest is cotton denim.

For your purposes I would reccomend the small model and carry only one spare magazine.

This is my set up with the larger model and an ArmaLaser on the P-3AT and two spare mags. I carry this 24/7.

Hot you say...then you need a S&W 642 (Aluminum Frame that will not rust) and a Mika Holster (does not sweat). Carry in the front pocket of your cargo shorts.

I too can recommend Thunderwear or Smart Carry. Both are well suited for what you will be doing. I carry exclusively via this method and the gun virtually disappears. Shorts, jeans, cargo pants, work pants, shirt, no-shirt, tucked, un-tucked...does not matter!!

One operator's opinion.

Stay Safe.

If you're moving from IL, I doubt you'll want to wear two shirts, especially doing manual labor.

I'd go with pocket carry until you get acclimated and your blood thins out.

Then you can conceal anything under the parka you wear when it drops below 70 degrees. :p

I am thinking your right about the 2 shirt thing. I normally wear a jersey and an undershirt.

So the spare mags rust? Damn. I am not 100% sure I am going but I may go down for a week or two to help my friends uncle. If I can stay up here and work during the summer I will as I think it would allow me to keep the job during the next school year.

Let's assume practical carry... like a Beretta 21 or a Kel-tec. In fact, those are about the only two guns that I would consider truely unobtrusive and comfortable enough for summer, outside carry. You could conceal them in the pocket of cargo shorts or in an IWB holster under a t-shirt, hawaiian shirt, or a polo shirt. Remember that if you have to reach up to work on something, your shirt could come up and voila, you've exposed your IWB gun and probably freaked out the people whose air conditioning systems you are working on. Also IWB may be out if you have to wear a back support belt. In which case, cargo shorts it is. If you have something much bigger than those two guns, I'd say forget about it, too heavy and too hot for the summer time.
