I've been wanting a 22 revolver for some time now. The Ruger Single-Six series I have hear good things about them. In particular the convertible model is interesting having two cylinders one cambered for the 22LR and the other for the 22Mag. Since the mag has a slightly larger diameter bullet I assume the barrel is spec'd for it. If that's the case would that throw off the accuracy of the 22LR? What are your thoughts on getting a convertible model versus a single caliber model?

I have had a single six for quite a while and can't imagine trying to get by without one. It is not as accurate as my MKII, but for informal shooting at cans and steel targets I can't really tell the difference. I like being able to use the magnum cylinder. It is a big step up in power and makes a nice camp/security gun for desert time. With the introduction of all the quality .22 Mag SD ammo, it is even better. If you are an accuracy nut, then it might not be the best choice, but if you want an indestructible field gun, then it is the way to go.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Matt

EDIT: This is also a good place to look:

I like mine. I never use the .22 mag, but figure it's a worthwhile option. I haven't noticed any lack of accuracy when shooting .22 lr, but saying "it's as accurate as I am" probably isn't saying all that much when I say it :)

The .22 Magnum makes a dandy squirrel gun. I had one years ago and used .22 WRF in the magnum cylinder. The .22 WRF performed about like the .22 LR, but the slightly bigger cartridges made handling easier with cold hands. Don't know if .22 WRF ammo is still avaialble now.

Never really used the .22 LR except for plinkin', a task for which it was more than adequate.

I agree with ECVMatt, the Ruger MKII and MKIII are a little better. However, the single six is no slouch. Like about every other .22 LR you have to find ammo it likes. Here are two groups well under 2" @ 50 yards from my single six convertible. I have never accuracy tested the 22 mag cylinder.

I have a 32 year old single six, still love it so does evetone else.
Bullet diameter is the same ,its the case thats different

Mine dates from '75.
Never regretted the $75 I paid for it new. :)
Still going strong.

My 12 year old grandson loves his Bearcat. What a sweet shooting little revolver.

Can't help you with the magnum decision, but you can't lose even if you decide to go straight LR.

Yep - bought mine in 1976 as soon as I was legal. My first handgun purchase (other than black powder). Never regretted it. It is sitting about 6 feet away from me right now.

Mine eats bulk pack winchester ammo and is a good shooter in LR and even better with shorts. The mag cylinder shoots well but the shorts win me bragging rights.

Mine is from nineteen hundred and eighty. I paid $100 for it and it is still going strong as well. I think S322 hit the nail right on the head. With the right ammo SS are great, with everything else they are a ton of fun! Really you can't go wrong.

The Ruger Single Six (and other models like the convertible) are available with several different sight set ups. I've had two SS pistols and the latest one has fixed sights as shown on the right, above. I would opt for one of the adjustable types the next time around.

Other than that these are fun and very well made shooters.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a 22LR in semi-auto, Browning Buckmark, I bought new back in 1992. It is extremely accurate. Still I love revolvers and have several, but not a 22. It's time to fill that void. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand the 22 magnum has a slightly bigger diameter over the 22LR by .001. I've read and heard this over the years.

.22 LR & .22 Mag do not use the same bullets, either in diameter or in weight & construction.

The Single Six (80's vintage) is one of my longest owned firearms and is one I plan on keeping for the duration. Over the decades it has seen a steady diet of 22lr run through it on paper, a vast variety of plinking targets (Peeps, cowpies, cones, cans, dirt clods, steel flippers...) and game (mostly Grouse).

The 22 magnum cylinder gets occasional use, mainly due to cost and I can reload centerfire ammo less expensively. It does extend the Ruger's versatility and bigger bangs are more fun. In silhouette matches the Rams are easier with the 22 Mag than the 22lr. On paper I can't tell the difference so 22 lr gets the nod. On bigger small game, Jackrabbit, Raccoon or even a Coyote I would opt for 22 mag.

It is a frequent sidearm companion when I hunt. Its primary duty is Grouse though back at camp I've found it comforting to convert it with the 22 Mag cylinder and keep it in the tent with me while Elk quarters are hanging in the nearby trees.

Im loving my Single Six. Stainless, 6.5" barrel, purchased around March of this year. I havent been to the range without it since. I love my semis, but its sure nice to have a .22 that can make a box of 50 rounds actually last a little while. As far as accuracy.... it is more accurate than me, then again I am no pistol champ. While .22WMR doesnt react any different on paper, I usually shoot at least a few rounds of it at the range - as someone else said - bigger booms are almost always more fun.

Mine is the convertible with a 9.5" barrel. Very accurate, excellent trigger. The long sight radius helps. Hardly ever use the WMR cylinder.

Concern about subtleties in accuracy should lead you to a double action with grip options or even a semiauto like a Buckmark. My best 22 shooter is a S&W 617-1.

Like so many others here I love my Single Six. Added a .22 Magnum cylinder a few years ago though it's primarily used in .22LR mode.

IMHO, too much is made about the bore size of .22 Single Sixes.

A $400-$500 revolver is never going to compete with the accuracy of a good fixed barrel auto like the Buckmark or Ruger MK-series.
