I have this new model ruger single six in .22 cal version w/.22lr cylinder.
Is it possible to buy a .22mag cylinder for it ?
what other information do i need to find out ?

Thanks

Ruger says the cylinder needs to be factory fitted. That means shipping your gun to Ruger. Some people will tell you to buy a cylinder and just try it. They say the chances are in your favor that everything will be fine. I would trust what Ruger knows. I would send it in and let them do it.

If I'm not mistaken the barrels on the convertables are a different bore size than the fixed calibers.
Better to go thru Ruger as they would know what is proper.

@ T Bran, gun is stamped with ".22cal" not lr or mag.
that's why i'm thinking it might be possible, will be giving the factory a call when they are open again.

I've found Ruger to be very responsive to emails. Might save you a long distance call.

On the Single six convertible guns that came with two cylinders the bore was sized for a .22 WMR. That means that it will give very good accuracy with the larger WMR round and so so accuracy with a .22 LR round. I used to own one of these guns and that was the case. With .22 WMR it was a tackdriver out to ridiculous ranges. With the .22 LR cylinder installed it was not very impressive. On your gun I have no idea how the bore is sized but getting a convertible cylinder for it may not be worth the trouble (or may not be possible if the bore is sized for the smaller .22 LR round. Ask Ruger about the bore size on your gun.

99% of the time, if the cylinder fits and is properly timed, it will work fine.

If you send it to Ruger, it will cost you $150 just in shipping.

In 1968, Ruger began using the same barrels for all .22 Single Six models, convertible or not. The difference in bore size between the pre-1968 guns and post-1968 guns is irrelevant.

This is correct. If you want Ruger's take on it, they would not retrofit a magnum cylinder to any Single Six with a serial number lower than 150000.

Well the difference in bore size was pretty relevant on the convertible Single Six I owned which was built around 1986.

Called Ruger, couldn't get the records dept. sent email.

not sure if the comment "150 just in shipping" is a typo ?

they said $150 covers return shipping, cylinder & fitting

Measure the length of the cylinder in the gun. Look for a magnum cylinder of the same length or longer. You can probably find one in the RugerForum classifieds. A little fitting of your own and you are good to go. Should be able to find a cylinder for less than $75. JMHO

FedEx and UPS both require handguns be shipped priority overnight and that is typically $75 in each direction.

"Friendly local FFL's" are not always an easy solution. Sometimes they are too stupid to know the rules/laws or charge you $50 anyway.

Ruger responded to my email quick. i am impressed.
Confirmed it is a "convertible" model.

Hey, if you want to cough up $150 to FedEx, it's your pleasure to do so.

And "stupid" FFL's that don't know the rules don't stay in business very long. But, even at $50 each way, you'd still be $50 ahead.

People do it all the time, that's life when you want a custom revolver.

Personally, I wouldn't spend ANY money sending it to Ruger for a new cylinder.
