I own an old Stevens 28 inch 16 gauge double barrel. On the one side it says stevens model 311 and on the other side it says 5100. It does not have a serial number on it,and it does not have a letter by the trigger guard. It does have a series of letters under the barrell, but I was told that these were put there for manfacturing purposes.Under the right barrel it is stamped S on the reciever, under the left barrel on the reciever it is stamped NJAA with a G underneath them, and the two A's are in circles. This gun is a pleasure to shoot and I think it was made before 1948,but it just says stevens not J. stevens, and the stock is a good looking birchwood I think, and not the early plastic material they used.If anybody could give me any information on this gun about the probable dates of manufacture, chokes, and value I would highly appreciate it.

What you have is a model -0,mark -I (generic term) Stevens model 311 in 16 gauge.

They are good, utilitarian grade field guns that are well made although not as

polished as higher priced guns.:D The fact that it doesn't have a serial number is indicative of manufacture prior to the 1968 gun control act.

age and value?

How do I find out what year it was made, and it does not say model 0 or generic anywhere on it.It is not probably worth much but it sure does look good and shoots even better. It's a Stevens-model 311/5100-16 gauge with no i.d numbers or letters on the trigger guard which they stamped on between 1948 to 1968 when they had to start putting serial numbers on them.Any other relavant info on how to age this weapon,or about its value would be appreciated.

I haven't seen the circled letters by the trigger guard. The ones I've seen were under the barrels on the receiver, seen when you removed the barrels.

Check a little closer there to see if you can find it.

I've owned two 311s, both Stevens.

The 12 gauge is described in the old floater thread about "Building a Lupara".

The 20 was a rebuild, the tale told in "Mom, Dealer in Illegal Arms".

Both were good, serviceable shotguns with zero maintenance issues.

Good info, but what about the 16 gauge? Does anybody Know anything about this shotgun thats rellevant to it?
