I'm used to my 9mm and choices of SD ammo. Looking at the .40 stuff there was some Corbon around 135-ish and Winchester 180 standard pressure, which I bought.

Anything wrong with the 180 grain for SD?

Shooting a 180 grainer in a .40 is much akin to stuffing a 115 gr. pill into the mouth of a .380 ACP. It will fire, but it ain't gonna be moving all that fast. The 180 and 200 gr. bullets are better suited to the 10mm auto; they severely encroach on powder space in the .40 Short&Weak. The heaviest slug I would consider feasible in the .40 is a 165 gr. I would expect terminal performance to be much better with a 155 or 165 gr. 180's work very well in a 10mm at 1200-1400 FPS, but I imagine would suffer a bit at .40 velocities, which will be much closer to 1000 FPS. Likewise, 135 and 155 gr. projectiles tend to be erratic when used with full-power 10mm loads.

180gr works OK in 40sw. 40sw can send 180gr 1150fps
it can send 200gr 1050-1100fps.
sometimes 180gr wont open to its full potential

they say some of the 180gr were developed to open up at 950fps. but they seem to open up much better when higher velocity is used. 950-1050fps is standard for 40sw. different JHP different results.
try and make sure its doing atleast 950 when it hits the target which is no problem if its doing 980-1050 from muzzle down range at 30 yards it will be doing 950-1000fps. but is dependant on various real world variables. wind, temperature.

135gr,150/155 gr bullets are designed to open better then again they fly faster. the 135-155-165 hollowpoint can be larger than 180gr varies per manufacture

federal hydrashock 135gr does 1125-1150fps muzzle and is very easy shooting. its lightest 40sw made commercially like shooting 9mm.

last I shot 40sw 180gr white box JHP I got velocities in 750fps range. which is dang near 200-250fps off from what it should be. noticed the bullets were over crimped and under sized.

would go premium stuff for 180gr like Speer GoldDot,Winchester SXT or Ranger line if you can find it those open good with lower velocity. Remington Express or Golden Saber. Federal Premium. Doubletap and BuffaloBore might be good havent tried but they offer ammo in 40sw that take 40 to its faster capabilities with heavy bullets at safe pressure.

anybody calling 40sw short and weak needs to check the latest gen and capabilities. it gives 10mm a run in most commercial offerings which is dwindling down to about nothing. but same advances in 40sw makes other cartridges will see benefits.

That's pretty slow. Maybe I'll just use these at the range instead.
