As near as I can tell, OR doesn't have a 'safe firearms storage' law. I'd advise you to make sure that is indeed the case however, by doing your own due dilligence on the matter.

Even without it being required by law, keeping unattended firearms locked in a safe is just a basic all-round good idea IMHO. If you want a handgun available to you around the house, then carry one on your person. It can be done with little hassle, I do it every single day. I cannot in good conscience advise leaving unsecured unattended firearms scattered around the house, no matter how well you think they are hidden.

I say this advisedly- my wife and I keep strategically placed long guns out of the safe and hidden away while we are at home. When both of us are gone, the guns go back in the safe. Yes, it is a hassle to put them away and take them out repeatedly. It is also a hassle to lock the doors, lock the gates, arm the security system etc.

But it is not as much of a hassle as dealing with the potential aftermath of not doing it every time we both leave the house.

You can rule your habits, or you can let your habits rule you. Your choice...

I keep a J-frame or similar sized gun in every room in my home, But if I have enough time or just feel like getting the bigger gun, I fetch my Sig from the nightstand.

If frequent nocturnal trips to the refrigerator to get a drink of cold water are the norm you there are two things.

One; have your blood sugar checked. Excess thirst is one of the first signs of diabetes. Possibly see your local acupuncturist also, as this he/she might have something that will help.

Two: you could keep a pistol in a ziplock bag in the fridge or freezer somewhere. It's actually a pretty dry environment and won't damage the gun unless you frequently take it out and put it back and build up condensation on it.

Lots of good answers here!

Keep a cereal box or a snack box atop the fridge with your preferred backup enclosed.

If I may offer one suggestion, given the surroundings...
Research and select the right round for your environment.
Over-penetration is a liability issue in my book, and worthy of at least some consideration in a townhome environment.
