What would you do, it's 2:50 in the morning and you are awoken to you neighbors dog barking, and a strange sound, you look out the window and see nothing, and crawl back into bed, about 30 seconds after crawling into bed you realize what that sound was, because you are hearing it again, it's the sound of a Garage closing on your duplex. You know neighbors in your duplex have just finished moving out so it's vacant, your Bedroom window is about 6 feet from your Garage door, and thier Garage door is around the corner offset about 6 feet. The dog is still Barking, and the Garage is still moving..... You also hear nothing excpet the Garage door moving, and the dog barking, no voices or footsteps..... You have 2 handguns in the house and they are in the bedroom with you in a safe, and you have a Surefire light near the front door, and 2 streamlights in the bedroom.....

What would you do??

All kidding aside, without getting elaborate here, I'm all for the following:

Chamber check, spare magazine, flashlight, position of advantage, phone the police... no need to go investigating outside of your home field advantage.

...did I mention anything about a shotgun yet?

I've thought about a similar scenario... and in my situation, I'd go into ambush mode...

I don't have any reasonable means of escape if someone breaks into my apartment. Everything's in a line from my bedroom to the front door. My plan is concealment, and ambush. If I roll off the bed and stay prone, the BG can't see me until i've already got a good chest shot, given the layout of my room. My plan is to keep quiet, roll, grab the XD between the mattresses, and once I identify the threat, (and make sure it's an actual THREAT) take appropriate action.

The local response time to a 911 call is "About 30 minutes, if all the gates are open."

So, hearing wrongful noises, I'd get my Strreamlight and my 1911 and go out the door farthest from the noise. I'd do my normal sneaky-snake deal and circle one of the little rocky knobs around the house until I got a view of what's going on. People are a lot easier than deer. I'd watch and wait and sorta make up my mind about the next step. After that, it would depend on how much the milk of my human kindness was curdled.

The weaponry issue is the least part. My old Model 12, using high-brass heavy-load 7-1/2s, made a full grown bobcat DRT at 25 yards. If you hold a Streamlight alongside the forearm of a .30-'06, you can break a deer's neck at 75 yards. It takes very little low-light practice with a 1911 to be able to hit COM at ten or fifteen yards...
