I'm not sure if this is in the right section, but I'll post it anyway, since it's about home protection strategy.

I recently bought a finger-keypad two gun safe where I keep my pistols. Now, I subscribe to the theory that your pistol just helps you get to your shotgun or rifle, so I'm now looking at a quick access way to store my shotgun.

Let me set the scenario: townhouse, no room in the bedroom for a full safe. Maybe in the office, but that would require moving across the stairwell top, which might expose me to fire. So I would prefer to keep the shotty in the bedroom, albeit maybe not right next to the bed.

So keeping one shotgun in the regular safe is not an option, since I'd rather stay hole'd up, and I can't put a new safe in the room with me. I seem to remember seeing some sort of quick release mount for a shotgun that held it on a bed frame or in a closet, but I can't seem to find it anywhere (it would help if I remembered make or model name).

Anyone here know what I'm talking about or have any other ideas? Right now the shotty is unloaded, and has a cable lock going through it under the bed. Not bad, but I'd rather not fumble with a cable lock and loading it while the wolf was coming up the stairs.

Thanks for any help,
JH

Is there a reason you need it locked?

Mine is loaded under the bed. The wife's is in the bathroom next to the throne..........there are others.......and, we don't have kids.......chris3

I would like it locked for when I am not at home. The last thing I want to come home to is an intruder with my gun.

But, no kids, and my friend's know to knock, call, or make lots of noise and not surprise me :)

That's what I was looking for, thanks!

All the other one's I'd found were for cars with custom mounts (and were very expensive). I thought I saw one with a four button combo pad, but keys in the safe are fine by me.

Thanks,
jh

GunVault, before they went belly up a while back, made something called the Long Gun Vault that you might have been thinking of. The action of the shotgun fits into a molded form in the push-button case (unlike their regular gun vaults it's made of aluminum not steel). Here's a picture from the web:

GunVault's apparently back in business but they're only selling the regular vaults. I got my LGV last year on clearance for like $30 or so. It's not the highest of security by any means, but it's better than nothing. And hey, I'm only out $30 anyway.

I keep my 870 mounted to a wall near the bed (out of sight) with one of these:

I have a L-shaped wood screw mounted in the wall to hold the muzzle (like the Mossberg lock Box) and a peg mounted at the other end to hold the stock. From the Magloc web site:
· Quick release even in total darkness (no visual contact)
· Prevents unauthorized use of firearms
· Integrated trigger and cable lock
· No batteries or keys required
· Locks most types of firearms
· Increase child safety
· Adjustable combination
· Lock teeth are concealed and cannot be easily picked

I can in fact get it unlocked and deployed in a couple of seconds in the dark, just by feel, as the company claims. Disadvantages I have found:
- Can be pried off with a crow bar, especially from the wall mount.
- Fairly easy to pick (but let’s not help the budding thieves who may wander on this site by telling them WHY or HOW it can be easily picked.)

So I have it mostly because we have kids who are not old enough to be responsible with unlocked firearms, and to maybe slow down an inept burglar. This lock won’t stop a professional thief once he find where it is hidden.

(Also, I am not saving anything about the Smartlock and Smartgun products made by the same company; that seems to be an hot button topic for some people.)
