I have some empty .223 cases that measure less than the trim to length. The lengths on the cases in question run around 1.1746 and the trim to length is 1.175. Is it ok to use these or are they trash now? I know they will lengthen with firing but don't know if it is safe to fire.

You can't measure fired brass.

They have to be FL sized first before the case length measurement means anything.

Yes, sorry that's what I meant, and they were after sizing/depriming

I load and shoot brass with that exact measurement all the time! It shoots just fine through an AR. Most of mine are FC brass that are that length.

1.746" is well within SAAMI limits for commercial ammo. Load'em and shoot'em.

Great points all. Thanks a bunch. Now I just need a primer pocket reamer lol
