quick question

Guys,

I have a quick question, but maybe a dumb one.

Anyways, I have a .22 Rimfire rifle that I zero'd with a scope on it, but my cousin claims he can hit same target @ 75 yards without the scope. Now if I take off my scope and see if he can prove it, and when I put my scope back on, will I have to zero it in again? Thanks if anyone know. I just hope I dont have to mess with the scope if I was the remove it so he can prove his point.

Quick answer, Yes.

It might be really, really close when you put it back on. It might be like it was never on the rifle, ever. But 99% for sure it will move at least a little.

Decent gun, decent mounting, decent 'scope--not all that hard to re-zero.

A thought--Why not let yr cousin bring his own .22 to prove his point?

And what IS his point anyway--that he is a good enough shot to not need a 'scope at 75 yd, that the rifle is inherently accurate, that you are "cheating" by using a 'scope, that a 'scope at 75yd is an unnecessary extra, what?

And how big is this target he expects to hit?

Another thought--what kind of equipment are we talking about here, a light, cheap rifle with a $25 'scope, an Anschutz with a bull bbl and a Unertl, or something in between?

And how is yr cousing going to take this shot, offhand, prone, or benched?

Mebbe you see where I'm going here--we need a little more detail, to answer yr question.

If you remove the scope and them remount it you may find you are close at 75 yards to the same point of impact, but you may not.

If the scope isn't difficult to re-zero you may enjoy the experience. If it's very annoying to re-zero you probably won't.

Whether you want to go to the trouble or not depends upon how badly you want to find out if your cousin is just an empty braggart or not.

the gun is a rimfire marlin rifle.

He claims at a stand he can pop a soda can @ even 100 yrds w/o a scope. I call BS. Now if he says its my rifle. I will be glad to have him shoot my Enfield to prove his point.

The thing is, he claims since he was in the army he received some shooting metal, blah, blah , blah. So he is going to prove it this spring break when were in Louisiana.

If your gun was an AR or other rifle with a rail on top, there are some scope mounts that allow you to keep zero when removing and replacing the scope (mount comes off with scope).

I could hit a soda can offhand at 100yds with open sights but not very often/consistently. Challenge him to do 10 out of 10 and his tune may change or maybe he is channeling Annie Oakley. Your POI will undoubtedly change unless you get lucky.

Um, as long as your iron sights are set up and/or you give him a sighting shot,
shooing a soft drink can at that distance with a .22 shouldn't be a problem.
My gallery gun is zero'd to 75m with its 85yo iron sight, 75 yards is so close to make no difference.
Once you get the holdover right for 100 it isnt that hard really.
Or did I miss something? (I just got up)

I could not hit a soda can @ 100 yrds even with my best matching sunglasses or optics/glasses on my eyes. I cannot even really see it. I admit I can't, but this is b/c it will be to small to see it with open sights.

I could hit a soda can (iron sights) first try with something other than a Marlin 22 with regular old CCI blazers...I don't think a scope would help me. Some good 22 ammo with a nice gun and maybe. Tell you what though, give me a 10rd mag out of that Marlin and I'll get it with at least one...
