Can I get some opinions on this style of rings? Am thinking of using Leupold QR rings, and even though I doubt I'll be removing the scope all that often, I still wonder about play and/or wear on the mechanisms.

Any opinions/experience with quick release rings?

I tried Leupold QRW rings and bases a .375 H&H mag. They wouldnt stay tight.

I've used the Leupold and Burris QR Weaver-style rings on my 30-30, and both worked OK. The Leupold version has a more robust cross-brace. Both could be removed/reinstalled and the scope be reasonably still zeroed.

I've used leupold's QRW on my browning buckmark rifle (on the rare occation that I detail clean it I have to remove the scope) and on a 30-30 with the scope in the forward scout mount, so that I can take the scope off and use irons if I need to. The rings work well in both applications, and they do hold a pretty good zero.

Do they only lose some of the zero when removed and then put back on?

Or do they lose zero even when installed and zeroed in (just from normal shooting & carry)?

I have never had the rings lose zero while installed, and both the Burris and Leupold were within a RCH of zero when detached/reinstalled.

Apparently Leupold only makes the QR rings (not the QRW rings) for the Marlin 336. Are there any other makers of good Quick Release rings?

rbernie, do you mean that Burris makes them?

Leupold and Burris both make quick-detach Weaver style rings. I buy mine from MidwayUSA.

Personally, I prefer the QR system over the QRW. If you will not be taking the scope off often as you mentioned, the QR would work great. The tolerances between the base and the rings of the QR are tighter than the QRW from my experience. (Have a few QRs on Winchester and Savage bolt guns, a QRW on my varmint AR.)
