So I just got some lead bullets and this is the first time Ive tried my hand at lead. Ive loaded countless fmj's but I thought it was time to broaden my horizons. Ive got several manuals and quickload. Im coming up with some load data. Right now Ive settled on
9mm
Case: military surplus once fired
Bullet:MBC 115 gr LRN "Parabellum"
Primer:WSP
Powder:5-5.5 gr Unique
COAL:1.120
I will start at 5 grains and work up to 5.5.

Is this a sound plan?
In quickload I made a bullet profile for the MBC Im loading, however all that is from what I can tell is bullet length, weight and diameter. Can quickload tell the difference between a lead ball and an fmj? Is there a value for lead I need to enter somewhere?

The only place where lead makes a difference compared to jacketed in QL is start (initiation) pressure in the Charge window. The hover over window gives recommended pressures for lead and jacketed handgun loads; 1160 for lead and 2175 for jacketed.

Unique is a bulky powder and 5.5g is going to be right at the edge of compressing the load. Unique is OK with a little compression, but variations in seating depth will affect Pmax a lot. Of course, you'll see that in QL. If your start charge cycles the gun properly, you should stick with it.

As yesterday went on I ran into a few issues, finally resolved them though. Thanks for the info. I found that after a few hours fumbling around in QL. I made some dummys with coal at 1.120....didnt pass the plunk test in one of my barrels, the pf9. So I ended up following the Lyman 49th recipe for a 120gr LRN and made some catridges at 1.065. Needless to say I had to reduce the charge quite a bit. I loaded up some test loads ranging from 4 to 5 gr unique. Hope to make my way to the range soon. Next was the case belling. After several trial and errors I couldnt beleive how much bell I had to do to these cases to stop bullet shave. BTW unique sucks for metering. Cant wait to use this stuff up.
