This is going to make me look dumb.

Can I put a suppressor on a sig mosquito (.22 pistol, threaded barrel) legally? I mean without having any license or a permit or anything? I live in Alaska.

Thanks,

Dan

Sounds like you'd be treading into dangerous territory if you add a sound dampening device to your gun without a permit to do so. I don't know much about the laws in Alaska but I would be very careful before doing anything that could be illegal.

You can buy a suppressor, but you have to pay a $200 tax stamp to the ATF and if Alaska allows you to own them. I'm not familiar on the law there.

One of our members, 444, did a nice write up on what is required to buy a suppressor in this thread (post #6) Sorry I don't know how to link to a single post.

As with most things, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to explain this better than I did.

You don't need a license or a permit, per se - what you will have to have (as long as suppressors are legal to own under Alaska state law) is a "tax stamp" which is done by paying $200 to the government, which will allow you to legally posess a NFA item such as a suppressor.

First, find a Class III dealer in your state. Most of them will be able to walk you through the rest of the process. There are also a few ways to go about it (forming a Trust, etc), with different people advocating different approaches. All work, which one works best for you, however, is something that you're going to have to figure out for yourself.

But in short - you do have some hoops to jump through, but in the long run, the process is not that difficult. I'm considering getting into the NFA game myself as soon as I Can afford the tax stamps for a SBR and suppressor to go along with it.

Good luck!
