Ronald Reagan is the only president to have signed a true gun ban into law, hardly the authority on freedom or gun rights.
And that is surprising how???

Politics 101 - A course designed to teach the aspiring politician how to speak out of both sides of his/her mouth without confusing the rabble.

btg3,

You have several bogus quotes in your 2A section. See: http://guncite.com/gc2ndbog.html

Bogus:
"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"
-- Thomas Jefferson, 1 Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334

"The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good"
-- George Washington

I hold it to be of great prudence for men to abstain from threats and insulting words towards anyone, for neither the one nor the other in any way diminishes the strength of the enemy; but the one makes him more cautious, and the other increases his hatred of you, and makes him more persevering in his efforts to injure you.
-Niccolo Machiavelli

They were afraid, never having learned what I taught myself: Defeat the fear of death and welcome the death of fear.
-G. Gordon Liddy

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms. — Robert Heinlein

“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.”
-Abraham Lincoln (Ironic that he denied them the ability to do so.)

The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.
- Marcus Aurelius

"Guns aren't toys. They're for family protection, hunting dangerous or delicious animals, and keeping the King of England out of your face."
-Someone's profile on THR. Let me know if it's yours, because it's hysterical.

OUTSTANDING !!!! i once started a new thread here asking for just this kind of information, and was given a couple mildy useful links in response. Well done !!

I doubt the authenticity of many of the quotes. I do not doubt the integrity of those who posted them, but we tend to really embrace anything that seems to reinforce our opinions. Urban Legends is full of such that come almost every day in emails.
I would have to see some reliable sources to accept that all or even most were genuine.

As to the Luke 22 passage, it does clearly establish the right of self defense, but is not a command for all to be armed, and it does not trump the right of a pastor to prohibit carrying in that church. In fact except for the actions of Peter attempting to protect Christ there are no passages or evidence that they ever used a sword. They may have carried swords, but evidently only two were at that time.
I also think it is a misused passage, but must say that Jesus was speaking literally, and does give permission for self defense.

I do not think that next to the Constitution the right to keep and bear arms is the most important thing for the nation. This nation is in dire straits, and we can keep and bear arms.

Regards,
Jerry

Luke 11:21 is often used out of context for self defense though. Jesus was using it as an ananolgy for the spirit. We use it not as the analogy that Jesus meant, but the literal meaning.
