He would make a great orator for the NRA for a host of reasons, beginning with the fact that he's famous, passing through the fact that he's damn good at getting to the point (even if, sometimes, in a crude sort of manner), and ending with the fact that there isn't much talking back you can do to someone who's put his life on the line for his country

Definately!

I've read somewhere when interviewed he expressed some very pro RKBA sentiments. Could be better candidates, could be worse.

He went to knob creek and drooled over all the privately owned MGs and had a good time without saying anything negative about civilian ownership.

We could definately do worse than R Lee Ermey.

While i enjoy Mr Ermey's work, i'm not really sure that he even wants the job, nor do i know if he would want it. He seems to be very much the competent professional though and if elected president of the NRA i'm sure he would serve his term admirably. Of course the fact that he is a paid spokesman of glock may or may not interfere with his job, but regardless i don't think he'd do a bad job. That being said I to think that Tom Selleck would do a better one. Though i think that he should be forced to wear the tigers hat 24/7 if elected:)

"Yes, he'd be great for the job. 61 76.25%
No, he wouldn't do any good for the NRA. 19 23.75%

I am amazed and disappointed that we are divided on this by 24%. It just goes to show even more now that gun owners cannot agree on something so straight forward. What a mess.

I got to shoot the sh*t with R. Lee at the N.R.A. convention here in Milwaukee, when he was at the Glock booth. Damn nice guy, took some time to BS with my buddy Ned and I...(Former 1371's.)

I'm with Nomad, 2nd. and for the same reason. I met Gunny last summer in PA and there's something about the guy that just didn't sit right. We have to remember that he's a guy first, not just the TV/Hollywood personality. His main focus is his sponsers & advertisers and unless he was willing to leave his TV show and movie rolls as there would be constant conflicts of interest for him.

I like the idea of R. Lee testifying in front of Sens. Clinton, Schumer, Durbin, Feinstein, Kerry, et. al.

I do not. I REALLY do not.

I think the American people deserve someone a bit more suited to playing in a major political arena. Image like Ermey's is great and all, but it's value is in leading already staunch devotees. That's important, but it isn't enough in and of itself. He's not appealing to the very important contested ground, potentially extremist to a great portion of them, and is likely to be alienating... even to many pro-gunners.

While I would love to see the Gunny rip some Senator or Rosie a new a##, i would have to say Tom Selleck would be a better choice.

I question the intellect and tact of this guy. No disrespect, I just don't think he's what we need.

Agree with Wayne that a Tom Selleck type would do wonders...

Image is too important - sad but true.

Tom

He kissed Jack Black, full on the mouth, which has to be a NO!

Note: I'm not anti-gay, I just think anyone with the bad taste to kiss THAT idiot has to be a loon! :neener:

Come on guys, let's not give the guy a hard time for something he did as an actor (The Jack Black thing). Remember the movie "In and Out" from '97? R Lee isnt' the only actor who has had a scene kissing another man.

That said, I think that either Gunny OR Tom Selleck would be good for the overall image of the NRA and would help to get the message across to those on the fence.

I would love to see him berate Hillary.

Yeah... you see the problem is that on the battlefield where society's rules are constructed people aren't permitted to behave that way. And the soldiers in that conflict don't automatically defer to you because you have stripes on your arm and yell a lot. Methinks that in a true match of intellect Hillary would eat R. Lee like a breakfast croissant.

Sorry to say it... but where this fight is concerned Clinton, Feinstein et al ARE the biggest, baddest, meanest motherf*****s in the valley at this point in history.

We need bigger and better than a TV tough guy.

Ermey is a genuine hero and well deserving of the office, but he's just a little too over-the-top for the average American. Just about everyone here on THR wouldn't have a problem with him, but for anti's, or even the undecided, he just reeks of the bloodthirsty kill-'em-all-let-God-sort-em-out stereotype that the anti's love to paint us with.

I will have to vote "No."

Yep. The mans got a point.

I've got a question - Whats so wrong with the president we have now? Sandy Froman seems like the perfect person for the job to me. She's a great speaker, and she doesnt fit the anti's stereotype of what a member would be.

I like the Gunny and I think he could serve the NRA, but not in the capacity of president.
I agree that Tom Selleck has more potential of winning over fence sitters than Gunny would.

He likes firearms but that doesn't mean he likes them in the hands of civilians. I haven't heard anything to really give a hint if he leans one way or the other. That said, MailCall! is the greatest show of all time.

From what I have seen from him, outside of Full Metal Jacket,in his tv series "Mail Call"(I think that it was the name,of his show.) he seemed very interested in firearms,he was an ex-marine(a good sign.),he seemed as much a hardass as his screen character Gunnery Sergent Hartman, was and he is a guy, that isn't pc at all,but one who would actually speak his mind.

He is also,quite funny,in a serious way.:) ;)

He would certainly tell Micheal Moore,Hiliary Clinton,Diane Fernstein, etc, etc, where to shove it.He would probably tell them:"What are your major malfunctions, you liberal numnuts!" and "Shut your mouths, scumbags."Or Micheal Moore, been given the Private Pyle treatment,on one of Moores anti-gun documentaries,by him, dressed as Hartman.

Oh and how do you know, what he might thinks about civillians rights to guns.If he became the NRA president, then I think he wouldn't be much of a politition or a diplomat,to the anti-gun groups or to the top-brass,in the Governers office-but he would speak his mind and respect your rights, instead of selling his soul,to the antis. Some one who is more refined like Tom Selleck, would probably win over the sheep, but there is something about Ermy, that makes you think, that he is right for the job.

We could do with him in the UK,too,as president of the BASC.:) ;) Really,he would annoy the GCN and that would be funny.

Micheal Moore, once pro-gun,now seemingly an anti.
