Doing some sorting again today and seems like some Remington 9mm brass has a different looking stamp on case. Is there a difference as in year made or does better brass have the cleaner stuck markings.

All salvaged from local range in last month or so.

It all works just fine for me for plinking but if you really want some good case information they have some 9 mm setback articles were they did some in-depth testing on all the different headstamps of brass. Livelife I believe wrote them

From what I have seen all, Remington, Federal, Winchester and a couple others I don't recall off hand, if you look closely have 3-4-5 different prints on their Headstamps. What it exactly means I have no clue.

There is... I have a fair amount of RP 9mm brass that's 10+ years old, and also about 1000 of the newer 'tiny type' RP brass, so, yes, these are different lots, very similar to Winchester brass in .45ACP that I have. They may have sourced their brass from a different vendor, they may have updated their machines, they may have made it at a different plant... who knows.

I guess one of these days I'll have to examine the cases more closely and compare them...

When sorting large enough piles of brass you'll notice numerous variations from the same manufacturer. Even from recent manufactured ammo you can find variations. I assume the large manufacturers have numerous plants or multiple lines in the same plant and could have various headstamps being made at the same time. Age of the brass can't be determined by how clear the markings are. Some times the variations can just be a slight change in the font.

I just sorted through 2,000 pieces of .38 Special brass that were recent range pickups and there were at least 4 different Winchester headstamps, 3 different Federal headstamps, 2 different Remington headstamps, and 2 different Blazer headstamps and those are the only ones I was paying much attention to.

They all use multiple vendors, and small changes (like what you're showing) is how they tell them apart. Winchester has cases marked "WIN" and "Win".

Nevadabob thx. The little dot after the rp means brass was made in newer part of plant.

Seems to me that the rim on these newer RP cases is undersized, in fact I don't use RP 9mm cases anymore because I had several pull out if the shellholder when resizing. Your image magnifies my perception of this because in the pic the primer pockets look YUGE! Especially the case on the left. YMMV

I didn't go through the who link that Nevadabob posted but there is a difference in the dash between the R and the P on some RP brass. I don't remember which is which but one of them means that it was loaded at the Lonoke plant.

When sorting brass I sort by headstamp and ignore minor differences.

I treat R-P, CCI/Blazer all the same, if I notice a difference in the force to resize the brass in a given head stamp I sort it three categories hard, medium, and easy. This has improved accuracy and lowered ES and SD numbers for me. I often toss the easy to resize brass, or I may use it for cast lead bullets that are oversized.
