A friend was beginning to tell me that Taurus was going to have a 500 S&W Raging Bull out next month. I was to busy and couldn't finish the conversation so I looked on their website but didn't see anything on it. Anyone else heard anything? I'd like to have one to go along with my .454 Raging Bull.

Do tell.

I handload 98% of my stuff for the .454 RB and have never had a problem. My latest test loads were 360gr GC bullets w/o a single problem and they were on the stout side.

One thing that I read is that the cylinder on the 500 RB is .200" shorter then the S&W. If this is true for the final production guns then I'm getting the S&W. If I'm going to roll my own I want to get the max out of it.

The cylinder of the Taurus, at least the one I handled at the SHOT show, is indeed substantially shorter than the Smith's.

I didn't have my calipers with me, but I folded a business card to the length of the cylinder and took the card back to the S&W booth. The Taurus is about two-tenths shorter.

If you use bullets with .700" long noses in the Smith, you get maximum net case capacity and thus maximum energy with top loads.

If you have to give up .200" of powder column with a same-weight bullet that has a .500" nose length, that is worth about 550 foot-pounds of energy.

Plus the Taurus has a typical Taurus trigger (lousy).

List price is 10% lower than the Smith. That's nowhere near cheap enough to justify buying it.

I love my RB .454 and have never had an ounce of trouble with it, after 500+ rounds of homegrown loads through it. It still locks up tighter than any other revolvers in my cabinet, zero FTF's, and has a nice-breaking trigger in single action (which is typically the only way I shoot it anyway.) Don't like 'em? That's fine with me... it keeps prices down for those of us that do.

Taurus 500

You guys need to quit monkeying around with the thought of the short cylinder of the Taurus, check out the BFR ! Then you won't have any problems with bullet length. HA !

As far as the Taurus triggers go, I work with both S&W and Taurus revolvers all day everyday and have checked alot of the triggers on both and the Taurus by far has the better trigger. I like both and own both brands but its really time to stop bashing Taurus.
I know they were bad in the early years, and I know that bad ones still get out but just name a brand that doesnt have bad ones get out.
Myself, I have had 1 bad Ruger, 3 bad S&W's, 1 bad Dan Wesson and numerous bad semis. But no bad Colts or Taurus.
Dont think I am a biased either way, I like them all but I will try out one of the Taurus 500's, after all I have sent numerous S&W 500's back for problems but not one Raging Bull.
