These rifles have somewhat of an unconventional gas-tube setup... it is free-floated, with out the locking tab at the rear. Will standard rail setups fit my rifle, provided that they do not clamp to the gas-tube?

This is the one I am looking at: UTG AK Rail Handguard

I'm also considering the Surefire setup, which will almost certainly fit, but I like the price on the UTG better...

The purpose is to install an EoTech holosight, and a VFG... perhaps a weaponlight, as well.

Thanks!

I don't believe so. Have you considered installing a regular scope rail for your optics and using one of the barrel clamp type (with weaver rail running on three sides) for your flashlight, laser, whatever. I dont believe the Ultimak will fit, not sure of the surefire.

I know for a fact that the Ultimak won't fit, because it replaces the gas-tube... but the Surefire and UTG rails don't seem to interfere with the gas-tube in any way, so I am hoping that the configuration thereof does not affect it.

Yeah... my concern would be the length of the handguards and the differant gas tube retainer. I'm not sure how that would effect things, but I doubt those designs were made with such a rare pattern in mind.

That's true... However, I seem to recall seeing, somewhere, a free-float AK rail forend which clamps to the trunnion. Perhaps I need to look for that one again...

Well, I got it... and with some minor filing on the upper piece, to clear the gas-tube, it fits solidly. Here's a pic, with a VFG installed... still working on the light and EoTech.

It's noticably dirty, I just got through shooting it before snapping the picture.

Very interesting... I just removed my gas-tube to check it, and then reinstalled it to verify it's relationship to the trunnion and gas block. It was perfecty concentric, straight, and aligned. I fired 8 mags through it yesterday with zero issues. I will keep this in mind though, thanks!

It did require some fitting, but doesn't seem to have any uneven pressure exerted on the gas tube by it.
