Hmm, I hope a piece of lead moving at a couple thousand fps faster than your pellet would hopefully bury itself into the wood at least.

Soft pellet @ 1200 fps, I thought it would completely mushroom and drop, sure glad it wasn't a hunting plated one. That was a 50 ft trip bouncing off 2 solid objects. My point - you DON'T know what is going to happen. If it was a keyhole in wood, the bullet would be stuck sideways in the wood plank, right - or a really big hole? I would suggest using fiber wall board for your backstop. Only time I've seen a keyhole was a sub-sonic 22 out of a barrel with the wrong twist. Maybe you had a real light load. A blown up bullet won't give a nice looking imprint. Just be safe.

Thanks for the word of caution, I will keep that in mind. My keyhole was exactly in the shape of the bullet, through the target and all the way through the wood.

XM855: "Wow, at an indoor range? I'm assuming the target was as far out as the range allowed, did they have a proper bullet trap? I always feel more nervous about shooting at an indoor range than shooting outdoors.."

The main reason I joined that range was they have rifle capability. I wanted to be able to function test a rifle somewhere. Other than that I have an hour and fifteen minute drive.
AK & AR are not uncommon in there. Anything up to .300 win mag. My ricochet coming uprange was the only one I ever knew of there. Remington Core-lokt from the .270. Looking at the the target/backstop/keyhole relationship I think it went into the ceiling which had deflectors. Still scary.
It's not a bad range. I mean it is what it is. But I manage to love the place. 50 yard indoors is better than nothing. I tend to shoot mainly .22lr in there. I go to the indoor on a week night. I go outdoors on the weekend. I would rather be outside & longer.

Agreed. Let's just both hope that our events were caused by sun rays hitting swamp gas at a certain angle while the planets were aligned in a certain way causing our bullets to do strange things.
