I'm looking to get a range bag, as lugging around ammo and gear in a plastic grocery bag and a steel ammo can is getting aggrivating. So, I'd like a fairly compact range bag that can hold the following:

1. Several boxes of .22LR ammo
2. Several stripper clips of 7.62x39 ammo (50+ rounds)
3. Several rounds of loose 7.62x54R ammo (no more than 50 rounds)
4. Ear muffs, shooting glasses, ear plugs and range permit

Most of the time, I'll only take one or two of my guns to the range to cut down on the stuff to carry, so keep that in mind. Also, I do not have a handgun (yet) so I don't need anything with pistol rugs or whatever. And I'm not on a SWAT team so I don't need any whiz-bang tacticool bags. Just a plain ol' range bag that won't break the bank.

About what size would I need? What kind of brick-and-mortar and online stores would sell what I need? (Besides the obvious-gun shops!)

One choice I use is a cheap plastic toolbox from Wal-Mart. I think I got something in the $6-$8 range. When full of ammo it is about as heavy as I want to carry. If there's not enough space in it than a second one is fairly cheap to get.

Actually, I want to make suggestion. What about a wheelie duffle or one of those huge packs with wheels on them? I saw one guy at the range bring one and thought, "What a great idea!" Easy on your back and easy to transport. It looks like you have a lot to take with you at the range.

This range bag from Midway would be hard to beat for the price. I have the 5.11 just like it and it is nice, but more $. I would have gotten this one if it had been on sale then.

I bought a cheap mil-surp style canvas mechanic's bag. It's a short, heavy-duty duffle that gets the job done.

My school bag is a lot like that. (I'll be going back to college in the fall.) It's a bit oversized for range stuff, but it just might do the job.

Thanks for the suggestion, CountGlockula!

I have an old DELL laptop bag I got out of a dumpster.

I pack a couple pistols, magazines and ammo in that bag. Also no one makes a stink about it since it looks like I'm taking my computer with me. ;)

I'm glad I can help. I travel with a Body Glove Scuba wheelie bag and it can hold EVERYTHING.

The Roller duffle/wheelie bags are great. Especially, if you're bring loads of ammo boxes...with a regular handle/over the shoulder range bag, it can weigh too much to handle.

I won a $50 rangebag recently donated by gunpartsguy.com - there's a pic of it in his online store under "Rifle cases and range/LE bags". Pretty decent bag, actually - just what I needed.

+2 on the range bag from Midway!! These bags are plenty big, well made, priced really good and designed for a shooter. All kinds of extras included with the bag. Best deal I've made in a long, long time!! Order soon, the sale ends the last day of this month. They also ship rapidly too!

The wheelie thing sounds great. Remember...if you get too much stuff in a bag, you can't carry it. Along with two or three rifles, targets, cardboard, a drink of water...well , it just gets heavy. A strained back would take the fun out of a range trip in a hurry!

The bag I use came from the gun show several years ago. I think its 20x10 x10. I don't fill it...so I have room to grow. :D

Mark.

I'm using my school bag that has that wheelie feature. (as per the suggestion of CountGlockula...sort of) But that's a temporary solution, since I'm going back to school in the fall. Sooner or later, I'll need a dedicated range bag. I was sort of thinking about this one:

I have a couple range bags. The first is a "15-inch tool bag" from harbor freight which is a knockoff of the GI mechanic's bag. The other is a 20" "sport" duffle bag from wally world. Both work really well, and for a total investment of under $20, including gas :p

I use an old surplus shoulder bag based on the British pattern 37 small pack with a shoulder strap. Allows me to carry my ammo, a small cleaning kit, some tools, goggles and ear protection just fine. Heavy duty canvas bags that cost me about $20 for 8 of them in the past.

Sportsmansguide.com always has a great selection of new milsurp bags for cheap, that would be the place to look for me. They ship really fast too

Garage Sales Have great selections of bags..I am using a LArge camera bag now made to hold a SLR camera..Holds quite a it..

Considering moving up to a KIDS sized Roling suticase but it may be to big.
