Range Brass!!!

I am a member at am Izaak Walton League club and do practically all of my shooting there. Normally there is little brass to be had. Once a month we have an IDPA competition, which I shoot. Usually i will leave a match with 200 or 300 pieces of combination of 9mm, 40, and 45. I am only interested in 9 so the others get traded away.

A few times in 2015 after a couple days of great weather I went to an outdoor public range nearby with the sole intent of picking up brass. I added about 4,000 9mm, a couple thousand 40 and 45 which got traded for 9, and a couple thousand 223.

At the range where I am a member, we are only supposed to pick up our own brass, but the owner has told me I can pick up anything left on the ground in the spot where I am shooting. He has a contract with a company that pays (I think) $2.50/lb.

I like to go there when it is not busy, and pick a spot where there is a lot of brass on the ground. :) I will usually strike up a conversation with anyone shooting next to me, and if they don't reload, I offer to sweep up their brass for them. I get a lot that way. Mostly 9mm and 45acp, but some 380 and 40 as well. I did find a rare 7.62 Nagant on the ground one time.

My outdoor range is primarily bench rest shooters. Very seldom is a single piece of brass found. However, during a recent trip I ran into a group of SWAT guys who need to shoot once a month. I struck up some friendly conversation and turns out we all knew a few people in common. The guys represented a few local (Cleveland Suburb) departments. They were all shooting Federal Gold Medal Match 308 Winchester issued by their departments. They gave me the brass. I got, all in all about 300 pieces of once fired Federal Gold Medal 308 Winchester brass. That was my once in a lifetime good deal. :)

My indoor handgun range allows shooters to only police their own brass. Sometimes I make out a little on 45 ACP if someone beside me is shooting the stuff and doesn't want their brass but that is as good as it gets. Actually cool with me as I prefer to only have my brass.

I pickup everything I can......but I think everyone at my club does the same. There are a couple police departments that do training there, so the best day for pickups is after they have been shooting.
To the OP....you can just go ahead and pick up that rifle brass and send it on up to Illinois. :)

I do volunteer work at a state ran range where all the brass gets dumped and sent to recycling. I usually help out on days the range is closed to the public and help with grounds maintenance. Since I'm the only volunteer that does that they usually give me the keys to the brass barrels (55 gallons drums) and I bring home 10-15 pounds of brass at a time of various stuff.

Throw all the brass in one bucket that I can recycle (22lr mostly) and all the steel and aluminum in another. I keep what I shoot and trade the rest.

Is there such thing as too much brass?

You betcha, I grab all the free range brass I can get my hands on. The past few months alone, my DIL and I have scrounged thousands of good 9mm & .40 cal..

I've kind of funny about rifle brass also, and unless I can tell it's once fired, I won't usually mess with it. I usually collect it and then use it for trade.
