Over the past few years I have begun to go beyond my collection of .45s by adding .40S&W pistos to my collection. I chose to add the .40 version of what I already have in .45 just to keep things easy. These include a USP and a P16-40, both of which I have shot quite frequently before. Third is an XD40, which I've only shot a few times, and not since I got an XD45. And finally, a brand new, never fired (except at the factory) M&P40.

I used Sellior and Bellot 180gr FMJ, 25 rounds at each target. The base target was a TQ15, with Birchwood Casey 5.5 inch Shoot-N-C rings over the center of the small ring on the TQ15. All shots were fired from 12 meters (which is the distance for the CCW quals in my state). First, let me say that all 100 rounds were "kills" in that they all landed within the large ring of the TQ15. But boy what a difference when it came to the 5.5 inch black spot!

The very first round I fired was with the M&P, and it landed just below and to the right of the 10 on the target. WOW. By the time I had fired all 25 rounds, 19 of them were on the Shoot-N-C target. This pistol is fantastic!
(Scroll down past the target for the next range report).

Next, I fired the Springfield XD40. Now, let me say that I am very happy with my XD45. But (by comparison) this gun sucks! I know, I've been shooting long enough to know that it is probably my grip or a flinch, and still very close to the center of mass, but compare this target to the other three! Most of the 25 rounds ate up that lower left corner of the Shoot-N-C. Only one in the ten ring (compared to 4 with the M&P) and I can only count 9 total, although I know many more actually hit the target, because the grouping was, to be fair, fantastic.

Next came the P16-40. Good results, similar to the M&P, but a bit looser on the grouping.

Finally, my USP40. Decent with the hitting of the center of mass, but not as good with the grouping as with the other pistols. Only 13 out of 25 on the Shoot-N-C (but as I said earlier, all 100 rounds were "kills" on the TQ15).

So, what am I doing wrong with the XD40? Obviously, I'm hitting the center pretty well with the other pistols. And with my XD45, I usually do as well as I did with the non-XDs on this range day. I used to assume stuff like this was the shooter (me) and not the pistol, but could my sights be off on this one?

You are jerking the trigger anticipating the recoil my friend.:)

Does this pistol recoil more than the others. Looks like classic pulling down and to the left. ( I recognize it from some of my shooting.:) )

I had the same situation with my XD-40. For whatever reason I discovered that using the pad of my finger to pull the trigger always caused hits like I was jerking the trigger but when I moved my finger deeper (to the "power crease") everything settled right down. Don't know if it'll work for you but you might want to try it.

No offense, but its your technique, not the gun...regarding your XD-40. I have an XD-40 and I can consistently punch out the X-Ring with one ragged hole. I take issue with the XD-40 sucks comment, I absolutely love mine, its a very fine pistol.

None taken. I know I need to work on it if I want to keep shooting this one. Like I said - "I've been shooting long enough to know that it is probably my grip or a flinch" and "So, what am I doing wrong with the XD40?"

Yea, that was just a bit of my frustration with myself showing through. Like I said, I don't have this issue with my XD45. I just need to figure out what is different between the two.

One thing I did notice while staring at the thumbnails of all of my targets: If I draw an + through each target, I notice the majority of my shots are hitting low/left (except on the ParaOrdnance). It is just far more obvious with the XD. Walkalong is right. The XD does kick more than any of the others, and .40 seems to kick more than .45. I used to have this issue when I bought my first revolvers, but managed to work it out. I guess now that I've started shooting something new I have to work it out again. I've only been shooting .40 for about a year and a half, now, and mostly just plinking. All of my carry pieces are .45, so I never really took the time to do the drills with them that I did to qualify for the CCW (and to stay proficient).

And quite frankly, all four of them are fine pistols. Now I just have to save up and wait for the M&P .45 to complete my .40/.45 collecting motif.:)

I've posted this any number of times. I have an XD-40 and TinyGnat has an XD-45. We've both noticed that the XD-40 has significantly more "snap" to it when you are shooting. And in general I consider the .40 S&W round to be one of the more challenging to learn to shoot well.

Hello SWModel19

I have an XD SC in .40 and it is quite "snappy" with 155 Gr. ammo. 165 Gr. is better, but 180 Gr. is much more pleasent to shoot. I have Ranger 180 Gr. SXT rounds loaded in it right now. They are pleasent to shoot and easy to drill little holes on target with. Try some 180 Gr. stuff. I think you will like it. I have a bunch of 155 Gr. Raniers, but I will shoot them up in my Elite Match which is, of course, heavier and easier to shoot. I also have some 165 Gr. Berry's and I will do the same, although I like to shoot some of those in my XD SC.
Winchester "RA40T" is what I have in my XD. It shoots great, expands well, and has good numbers over the chrono. It's not real hot stuff as far as velocity, but I like it.

In the XD SC - 75 Degrees

Hi - 891...Lo - 873...Avg - 880...ES - 18...SD - 5.... Factory Winchester 180 Gr. Ranger

Hi - 1100...Lo - 1066...Avg - 1077...ES - 34...SD - 11.... 155 Gr.Ranier reloads.

I was shooting them both in my XD SC and there was a big difference in felt recoil. The 155 Gr. reloads were snappy or harsh and the 180 Gr. Rangers were soft or just a big PUSH compared to them. NICE!
Those were the first 180 Gr. .40's I had shot and I now like 165 Gr. and 180 Gr. No more 155 for me.

Zero 165 Gr. JHP's shoot lights out in my XD and my Elite Match.:)
Just bought some Zero 180 Gr. JHP's to try.

And welcome to THR...................................
