Good day gents

We are working on referbishing and upgrading our range. We can shoot up to 1000m, however the club facilty only allows for 220m shots. attached is a picture of the benchrest area in extreme windy conditions.
We are very limited on when we can shoot due to wether conditions. 90% of all trips to the range is from 07:00 to max 10:00( almost no wind)
Our weather conditions are as follows:
07:00-10:00 - no wind( lowish temperature)
10:00- 14:00- moderate south westerly wind
14:00- till late- strong south westerly

2 to 3 times a year we have our East Weather, which is string Easterly wind from the desert( the picture attached), however this is normally from early morning to about 12:00, after that we have temperature in access of 35'C. with record heat of 48'C.

the area we use is owned by the military, thus all structures that we put up must be able to be easily removed else we lose it if the military decides to kick us out.

We have no water, no electricity and no toilet facilities at the range. ( we are looking to change the toilet and water situation.

if you guys could post pics of your ranges it would be appreciated. Please note that I am planning to steal ideas from the pics, so please if no-one wants to have their idea stolen, please do not post.

For further background, we were a very small club up to a few years ago. About 10 members, and with young blood stepping in and the founders stepping out, we grew the clup to about 100 members of whom about 10 are active benchrest shooters and the rest are predominantly hunters looking to use the facility only to practice and do load development.

we now want to invest all the membership fees back into the facility in order to improve the range experience and what not.

it was quite an interesting weekend. we hand our annual benchrest shooting competition that weekend.
we starter the comp at 07:30 with prestine conditions, but by 10:00 we were all inside a tent holding onto the poles so that it would not blow away. at 13:00 we started the competition again with manageable conditions. needless to say when the wind died down it was hot as hell outside( the devil would have searched for shade). next day, we had the .22 competition and everyone expected it to be nice and warm and almost everyone had shorts and t-shirts on with no jacket with in a 20km radius. ( luckily i keep a jacket in my truck at all times, when we got to the range, it was the coldest and wettest it has been for the year. you could say it was raining, but it was not rain as we knew it. ( you guys most likely would have experience something like that as well where it is wet outside but not raining and its not really foggy because you can see 100m in front of you.). it was so bad that after every 3rd shot you had to dry your riflescope.

it was great fun and we had quite a few laughs about it.

I am a member of an excellent gun club with about 250 members that is composed of mostly old men. They don't like to get up early in the morning but I do so when I go to the range I get there at dawn and I am the only one there so my shooting session is un-interrupted. In the summer when it is really hot (35 C) the early morning is the coolest and the winds are lower. Although I use paper targets to shoot groups at 200 meters the most fun as a hunter is to shoot steel silouette targets at long range. Our club has placed steel railroad rails with hinged steel targets welded to the top of the rail so they fall over when they are hit. The rails have a small tilt toward the shooter so that gravity holds the target up and it takes a solid hit to knock it over. Nothing is more fun for me than to shoot small bird size targets at 200 meters and further using only a rifle and a shooting stick.

Hi Sage

any chance of posting a pic of the silouette targets. sounds like something that can work with us.

thanks
