I took the 1873 out in the woods today. Just felt the need to make some smoke. I am sure yall can relate a little.
I bought a pound of Goex Pinnacle from Bass Pro Shop last weekend, had a coupon from them that saved me some money. So I thought I would give it a try today. Well first off the stuff was lumped up inside the plastic jar like nothing I had ever seen before. Not sure how to describe it or what to compare it too. Also in the powder were a couple of dessicant packs. I guess the dessicant did not work too well from the lumps in the fake black powder. Anyway I get the Goex Pinnacle unlumped so I am good to go.
Uberti sent a little booklet with this revolver saying that it should run off #11 caps ,30 grains of fff and a .454 ball. Kind of funny but the little booklet also says 30 fffg for hunting and showing off and 20 fffg for target. Well always out to impress myself I opt for the 30 grains.
I have CCI and Remington #11 caps. Well I find out today that the CCI and this gun do not mix. Took two slaps of the hammer to set off them caps. I switched to the Remington and shot 48 rounds without a misfire. I dunno if I will buy them CCI's anymore or not. They work on other guns but why have to try to remember what works where.
The only trouble I had was one cylinder jam from a spent cap.
yeah about that powder again. It is marked like it is equivilant to fff but the grains are fatter, I never did get 30 grains into the cylinder. I tried and the powder overflowed. I have loaded 30 grains of real black powder so I don't trust that the Pinnacle is equivilant to black powder or even pyro. One thing I did like about the Pinnacle is that it was clean. Next to no fouling in the barrel. No fouling around the forcing cone or frame of the gun. It is way cleaner than BP or Pyro.
Like I said the Uberti recommends .454 balls. But being the untrusting soul I am I loaded up twice with .451 balls. They seated fine but there was no ring of lead getting trimmed off the ball. But it did take some effort on a loading stand to get the balls into the cylinder. Anyway the .451 were all over the paper. Now mind you my standards are pretty low as for accuracy. In other words I ain't no Old Fuff. But these .451's sucked so bad I might as well have been shooting with my eyes shut. With .454's I could hit the broad side of the barn, but them .451's I could not even hit the barn at all so no more of them things.
Seriously though, using 25 grains of this Goex Pinnacle, Remington #11 caps,
.454 lead balls gave me a pretty good group at about 25 feet. I don't use store bought targets for pistols, but as an example if I had been shooting at a basketball I would have filled it full of holes. Good enough for me.
I did get off two cylinders full of shots by rapid firing, dang there was so much smoke it looked like the woods was afire. Could not even see the target stand. What a hooot that was.
I do pronounce that guns a shooter.
