We got to the range today, and before shooting my new SRH (see the revolver section) we spent an hour shooting our new carbines. DH has a WW-II era M-1 carbine, and I have a new Olympic Arms AR-15 Plinker Plus in .223. We shot at the 50 yard line so our aging eyes could actually see the targets through our peep sights :p and our reaction was...

Woo hoo!!!!!! :D :D :D

As usual, DH outshot me with my own gun. Clustered the 40 rounds I had left after I'd shot into the X ring and the immediate area in the green. The man drives me nuts. :neener: However, I did a credible job shooting out the X ring of my own target with it, and can't really complain. I shot his carbine and was tempted not to give it back. That thing is a breeze to shoot, especially from a bench rest. Less recoil than my .223, and it's no big deal itself.

No, we didn't think to bring home those targets for posting. But we did take pix of the new babies :neener: and here they are.

I found myself wishing it were possible to just get some of the anti's out there on the range with these guns, to get them to realize just how much FUN they are for plinking and target shooting. Maybe if they would just TRY it, they'd back off on how all our "assault rifles" need to go to the garbage chute. I know. Wishful thinking....

Both Carbines and ARs can be a lot of fun.

Did you find the Carbine felt smoother and "easier" in the hands than the AR?
I've noticed that my M1 Garand is a lot easier handling than my AR.
The AR sometimes seems to be all sharp edges, while the M1 isn't.

Smooth edges

That's a very good way to put it. The AR is crisper, more exact, than the M1 Carbine, but that very fact makes the M1 more fun (IMHO) to shoot when you have lots of ammo to blow through.

Springmom,

Which rear sight aperture does your Plinker have? I'd imagine it's an A1 aperture- see if you can find an AR which has an A2 aperture installed, and see if that's easier to use. I prefer iron sights on ARs, but find the larger A2 aperture much faster and more user friendly- with no deterioration in accuracy. It's pretty much the equivalent of what some folks call a 'ghost ring' rear sight.

If you decide you like it, the rear sight doesn't cost a lot and is pretty easy to change out.

Glad to hear you have one of those nasty ol' black rifles,
