If this looks familiar, I posted it in another online forum that several if not many of us also frequent.

I finally got to the range today to try out my hunting bullets with good (not great) results.

I came across these looking for a cast hunting bullet in a flat nose design and had to give them a try. Weshoot2 on this forum reviewed them here:

I really wasn't too keen on stepping right into using W296/H110 like he did just yet and 2400 didn't seem to show the velocity potential that I was looking for so I decided to buy a pound of H4227 since there was good data for it in my Hodgdon #26 manual. I used the data for a 275 gr cast bullet starting at 22.5 gr and worked up to 24.0 gr in ~0.3 gr increments.

I must say that I was a bit nervous pulling the trigger the first time since it was my first go-round with "full-house" loads in my 45 Colt NMBH and it sure was a big step up from the up to 9.5 gr of Universal that I had worked up to thus far. At 22.5 gr there was a good jab in the wrists off a rest and 24 gr definately let me know that I pulled the trigger far enough to release the hammer. I'm not sure that I did my best on all groups to hold them tight but here are the results nonetheless. All groups are six shots at 25 yards.

22.5 gr 4.2"
23.0 gr 3.3" (2.3" dropping a flier)
23.3 gr 3.7"
23.6 gr 2.9"
24.0 gr 2.3" (4 shots touching @ 1", 2 other touching below")

I hand reamed my throats and it generally tightened up my groups but it could be that there are two that are a bit off. Overal the groups go tighter as the charge weight went up and I still have half a grain to go before reaching the max charge listed for a 175 grain bullet. Hodgdon lists ~1300 fps with 24.5 grains of H4227 so I am guessing that I am at 1200 fps with the 24 grains that I shot today. I hope to get a chrono for Christmas for better range data.

I have loaded up 40 more at 24.0 grains and six more at 24.3 grains to see if they shoot even better with a charge increase. I have yet to clean my barrel to see if there is any leading with these loads but I am confident that there isn't. I'll be going back out to the range this weekend to try again and shoot out to 50 yards to verify stability but thus far all the holes were perfect circles. Hopefully in a couple weeks I will be able to get off a good shot at a Wisconsin white tail during an early gun hunt for a field report for you all. Stay tuned for future developements.
