Range Report: Ruger LCP *Problems*

Well mine has run 99% flawless with WWB, Pmc Bronze, Winchester STX, Fiocchi HP, Fiocchi FMJ, and Speer Gold Dots.

The very first mag downrange had two FTF's with Fiocchi FMJ's, and the second mag had one FTF with a Speer GD. However, it could have been me as I was experimenting with how to grip this little guy. And I tended to let the gun dictate the recoil. However, since then non stop flawless through 300 rounds.

Got the gun in today.

The recoil spring feels lighter, and the frame was machined where the peening was occurring. The barrel machine, slide machining, and hammer placement are still off.

I'll try and hit the range this weekend and see how she runs.

Not a big surprise. Takes time to work out the kinks. KelTec had a lot of problems with the P3ATs at first, too - had to replace a lot of slides. Ruger will fix it.

I don't see why get the LCP when you can already get the LCP cheaper and easier (and with the bugs already worked out) - it's called a P3AT. Maybe I'm missing something....

700 rounds

My son and I have put 700 flawless rounds through his lcp, with zero issues. I owned 3 kt's and could never get that type of performance. What little issue the Ruger has doesn't compare to the issue the kt's have had. So far I have seen no peening slides, cracked slides, cracked grips, broken hammer springs. time will tell but my bet the Ruger is a better made gun.

About 300 rounds

So far I've had one miss-feed out of 300 rounds and I'm pretty sure it's because I had a dented round. I've shot Winchester White Box some Hydrashocks and surprisingly, have run about 100 Blazer aluminum rounds with no issues. I do find the grip a bit difficult to hang on to at times. It's a tad thin but I can adjust. I ordered some LCP magazine extensions on eBay and that turned out to be a mistake. Though they do fit the bottom of the magazine they leave a quarter inch gap which makes a nasty pinch point when recoil occurs. I'm assuming they are made for a P3AT. Had I done a bit more research I would have found there are no extensions on the market yet specifically for the LCP. So far the gun is a keeper but I want to run more rounds through it.

Keep firing...cuz anybody who has a P3AT...or it's copy, the Ruger...will have malfunctions. Bet on it. Carry it in your pocket for a week then fire it. Again...if you tell me your weapon has never malfunctioned...I tell you that you have not fired it enough. The P3AT and the Ruger CLONE will, more than likely, fail you at the time you really need it. I have one...and it really is a very, very cheap pistol.

And you expected a Kimber for $250?

A $250 gun is a $250 gun. I have read several reports of the LCP working quite well. I am waiting for the newness to "wear off" and Ruger to get its process fully developed before I decide if I want one.

To me the LCP is a gun that you will probably run one thousand rounds through in the next fifteen or twenty years. For something to run a thousand per month through, I'll get something that is a LOT bigger, a LOT heavier and a WHOLE LOT more expensive.

I look at the LCP as one of the "when you just CAN'T carry anything bigger" (which happens very infrequently) it's a lot better than a .22lr. At least that's my opinion.

"The P3AT and the Ruger CLONE will, more than likely, fail you at the time you really need it." --DawgFvr

That's a very bold assertion. That means that out of all the times when somebody has had to fire a P3AT or an LCP in self-defense, the gun has misfired more than half of those times. (I realize that is the least exacting interpretation of "more than likely." Some people might more correctly say that to be "more than likely," the guns would have to fail perhaps upwards of 80 percent of the time.) Dawg, you must have access to some pretty informative data. I hope Ruger and Kel-Tec have the same data as you and are addressing the crisis.

Do you have the Kel Tec or the Ruger? I guess you really like the gun then...

Fact or irresponsible rumors :barf:

Just got done shooting and the last round in the magazine still does not want to feed. I'm guessing it's time for a new mag.

wrong

because it looks like the kt 380 which after 5 years still is giving big time issues, does not mean it will act like the kt. The lcp already has not shown any of the major symptoms of the kts, cracked grips, peening slides, cracked slides. broken hammer springs, bad extractors, walking take down pins. Broken triggers, defective trigger bars.. None of this has popped up on the lcp's and the kt's started doing this from the git go. Peening/hammered frame, which was on the first lcp, but Ruger stepped up and modified that area...

It is easy to make these comments but IMO darn hard to prove them..

I have another 100 rounds in. No issues during those. So far I've fired the following types of ammunition: American Eagle FMJ, Monarch FMJ (both brass and steel cased, 50 rounds each), Hornady JHP. Three rounds of AE during the first 100 rounds fired didn't want to chamber fully. Everything else has gone boom with no issues. I try to put 50 rounds through it every 2-3 weeks.

It would have been nice for Ruger to have included another magazine.

AE ammo

I fired 500 rounds of AE through the lcp with zero issues. Now had to buy some PMC 380 for the best price as the AE went up $4 a box ...

Nope, LB it doesn't.

It comes with a zippered gun rug with Ruger's logo, one magazine and a big freakin padlock that you could carry as a backup impact weapon. :D.

Springmom said it in her thread, never guy a new model in its first year. Let 'em iron out the bugs, first.

Why is accuracy irrelevant in any handgun, let alone one of marginal caliber that needs precise bullet placement? I never quite grasped this "belly guns don't need sights, let alone accuracy" concept. Accuracy is ALWAYS a good thing, I don't care if it's in a pocket .380 or a Smith and Wesson M41. More is better. If you're trying to kill a man with a marginal caliber, it would help to be able to hit what you're shooting at. What if the BG grabs your wife as a hostage? Think about it.

My LCP is plenty accurate as the report I did shows. I got 4 out of 6 on an 8" plate at 25 yds. with the other two barely missing.

10 yd slowfire group was very tidy too.

approx 4-5" spread at 15.

5-7 yds rapid fire was golden.

I like any self defense gun to be able to shoot less than 4" off a bench rest at 25 yards for 5 shots. Now, I will make a little exception for a gun so easily carried, but I won't like to rely on it as a primary if it can't at least hold 6" rested at 25 yards. I have a feeling the Ruger is better than that, though. :D

I expect any gun I own to shoot within a two inch group of aimed fire at 21 feet. If it can't do that I would never carry it. All of mine, whether steel, steel and polymer, large medium or small will do that.

Guns is going back

The gun is getting sent to Ruger, again. We'll see if they fix the feeding issue this time. :(

From my former career in OEM automotive production, I will never buy anything new!

After all automotive new model introductions, we were deluged with design changes to fix problems, issues, and correct initial design mistakes that derived from rushed mass production schedules!

Friend of mine bought one and brought it over to shoot. He didn't have much time, so we put about two magazines worth each of RemUMC FMJ and American Eagle FMJ into it. Typically, one round in each of the four magazines failed to fire.

Why? Don't know. Do know that the same ammo out of the same boxes and other boxes in the same lots did fine in my PPK/S. Granted, we didn't give the Ruger much of a workout, so I will reserve judgment, I suppose.
