Well as many of you know I posted a thread about my recent Tommy Gun purchase and promised a range report once I got out and tried it.

Here's my original thread:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=306913

Well here's my report, its not much of a range report but I'll add to it over time as I put more rounds through it. As for how it performed today, I very impressed!

I only put a 150rds through it, but it was a hoot to shoot and seems very accurate. I only set my target out at 50 yards, since I only had an hour to shoot and just wanted to see how it ran. The stick mag worked perfectly, 100rds without issue. The drum mag performed well also, but the bolt didn't close all the way a couple times so I had to assist it a tiny bit to close it fully. I didn't load the drum up all the way either, I only put in 25rds twice.

The only other complaint I have is that the bolt doesn't hold open on the last shot with the the drum mag. In order to remove the drum mag you need to have the bolt back all the way. The bolt is also very strong and hard to hold open. On top of all that you need to raise the mag release lever to allow the mag to slide out. If I had three hands this would be an easy task, but as it turns out I don't. Really you need one hand to hold the bolt back, one hand to hold the gun and raise the mag release and another hand to remove the mag.
If anyone knows any tricks to this process that make it easier PLEASE let me know. The drum mag is a lot of fun to use but the stick mag is much, much faster to change and obviously faster to reload. So I'll most likely invest in a few more stick mags and save the drum for special occasions.

Anyway here's another pic of the gun and one of the targets I shot up. A few stray shots here and there but overall I was quite pleased. Its certainly a different experience than shooting any of my other rifles. The gun makes a very distinctive sound when it goes off and boy oh boy is it fun to shoot, I wish I had a barrel of ammo and all day to shoot it!:D

Nice play toy and good report. They are nice to have but I think they are a nostalga item and not worth much else. they are heavy, the sights suck and as you said you need 3 hands for the drum mag. With that said I will admit I own one too and yes they are fun to shoot. I don't know what it is about the Thompson but I just had to have one. Congrats on yours it looks great! Mine is the commando version.

If you bought a 'Deluxe' version that came with a drum there should be what they call a 'third hand'.......

It's basically a slab of metal with an elongated notch that fits into the straight mag slot and holds the bolt back to install / remove the drum. The instructions state it's best to leave the third hand in place at all times when using a drum.

I'll check to see where you can buy one. ;)

Lucky fellas! If only I could buy a thompson... To add to my m1 carbine, and soon to be ordered m1 garand WWII collection. I sure would like to order the M1 version, with the bolt on the right of the reciever, triangular rear sight, and short smooth barrel.

J_Dillinger.....

Oh that's what that thing is! I do have one of those things and I was going to try and find out what it was and I completely for got about it.

That makes sense now, when I opened the plastic bag that had all paperwork in it that thing fell out. I picked it up and was like "what the hell is this thing?" I just tossed it back in the bag and forgot about it.

Thanks for letting me know. That thing's going on my keychain, I know I'll loose it otherwise:rolleyes:

nobody want/have the one used by ww2 troops?
I certainly want the M1 version that dscottw88 is talking about but I can't afford it right now, or probably any time soon. Maybe next year if I can budget it in, the aluminum receiver version I've seen for sale for around $850 new, but I would probably spring for the steel receiver version like I did on this one.

My first branch of the Military was the Navy and they had apparently just got rid of the last few thompsons and BARS on the last few ships that had them...
The racks were still there and marked for Thompsons on my first ship.

Later, back here in Alaska while I was law Dawging for 20 years, I was able to fire a nice old Navy Model that belonged to the local FBI office.

My buddy and I shot that poor thing until it was as dirty as a charcol bricket.

Since it was heavy and had a Cutts compensator I was able to write my initials in the target at 15 yards pretty easy in full auto mode. At 25 and 50 yards making center chest hits during full auto 5-shot burst was no problem.

I have grown to hate my drum, I only use it for photos. Sticks are easier to load, carry, cost bewtween 10 and 15 bucks, etc. I almost wish I sold my drum before the AWB died. I say almost because if I did, I'd be wishing I kept it.

The fit and finish is a lot better on my AOs than any Kahr I've seen, but it seems every Kahr has prettier wood.

That thing's going on my keychain, I know I'll loose it otherwise
It will fit on your keychain, or in the thompson. Not both. Yeah, I lost mine.

Anyway, here are mine. The pic kinda sucks because the camera kinda sucks, and the guy behind the camera isnt the greatest photographer anyway...
