I went shooting today i took my three black powder handguns and my 30-30. Then i started to shoot at the range of course. Well about 3 hours later a guys comes next to me. Looks pretty excited to see a black powder handgun on the rear bench. it was my 1860 army. He then pulls out his Ruger stainless old army (remington top strap clone). Ask me how heavy it was and then proceeds to show me his Ruger and hand it too me. i looked at him and asked what 3 1/2 lbs. He said yep "as big as they get". In front of his girl friend. I said "WELL I DONT THINK SO HARDLY". So i get my 1860 return to the forward bench. Set it down. Put the percussion Caps in my walker and Fire it off. Then i fired off my 1860 and the 1851. I then returned to the rear bench. looked at him. Set down my Walker and said " THIS IS THE BIGGEST GUN THEY MADE". Well his eyes lit up he asked what it was i told him. Then he asked about all my bp hand guns. i told him. Then he took his girl friend up to the forward bench to shoot. Then he returned to the rear bench and started to ask me all sorts of questions. THEN i see him trying to pour bp from the goex container into his powder measure. While he is doing this i fill up my powder measure with my flask and continue to load my revolvers. He then took his handgun to the forward bench. I took mine. We both capped them off. He started to shoot his ROA and i started to shoot my walker. After that i fired the other two. Then returned to the rear bench. I then started the process again. AS he continued to ask me a million questions. At that time the RO called for a sieze fire and he took down his target and left.

So if there is someone here by the name of Paul. I am sorry my walker is bigger than your ROA.

As far as accuracy Walker had it hands down. However it wasnt a fair fight. I had been there already 3-4 hours. Did 2 partial field strips and cleaning on all the guns. I was there looking for the right load and spot for each handgun. For the walker i tailored it to 55 grains of goex. Followed by a special wad then a .454 round ball. The round balls i casted on my own. After all this time of shooting i found the right spot. i was pretty much hitting where ever i aimed at. Just took a steady hand. As far as the ROA. im not even too sure it even got up to room temperature. I guess part of the problem was that i really believe this guy was there to show his girl friend how big and bad his gun was. Maybe even show her how to shoot it. I was wearing my big ear muffs and i could barely hear anything he said. Then during the sieze fire it seemed like he made up his mind to leave. I was even thinking of letting him use my flask. We could have both poured some bp in it. It just seemed like he was un prepared. all he had was an old tube of some kind of lube. i did not see him use a box of hornady bullets, he had to run up to the office to purchase percussion caps. Then he was tryin to pour goex from the can to a powder measure. I dont even think he was measuring it correctly as i did not see the adjustment lever at 40. Seemed like it was all the way down. If he would have stayed longer and would have just relaxed a little bit i could have helped him out. However i think it was more like the girlfriend deal. I hate to think what he did with that ruger. It seemed fairly new in the original ruger box. a plastic one. my guess is its where ever he is uncleaned just sitting there.

You Asked For It!!!! LOL

Well since we are comparing size here...chew on this for a while:neener:

Nope it is not mine...but I do think it is real. Sombody sure had some time on their hands.

hahahahaa. Like to see him Holster that. Big Bad Guns would have a heck of a time making a Holster for that.
Whats even funny is the size of the hammer. Some thing that big would destroy the caps

Okay..that one was just too big.....

Perhaps a bit smaller would be in order:neener:
One Inch Bore Cap & Ball... The guy holding it is the maker:uhoh:

And then there is always the modern cartridge revolvers:what:

i Held a smith and wesson 500. I just dont get it. Walker is the biggest im going to shoot. Just look at those things on the bottom. You almost need to bench rest those guns. There is just no way your going to accurately shoot those guns with 6 rounds. The Handles are to small and the weight forward of your grip is just to much. They are nice to look at very impressive of course But they went over the spectrum from "wow that is so cool i want one" to "that is the dumbest thing ever. that guy is nutts"

I will admit to owning a S&W 500. It never comes out of the safe. I do like large bore revolvers with lots of power but in a packable size gun. My .50 caliber Old Army weighs very close to the same as it did before the conversion and has a shorter barrel so it is actually a bit more compact. As far as revolver size goes my personal feelings are if it pulls my pants down when I put it in a belt holster...it is too big and heavy for me. I am glad people out there are doing such things on a custom and "one of a kind" basis. I would like to have a quality custom five shot C&B revolver in .58 caliber. I would not want the gun itself to be any more oversized than needed. Actually the Walker reminds me a lot of the 500 S&W of the day. It was without question the most powerful production revolver of the period. I find the Walker much to big and heavy for my tastes but it has and interesting history and I want one. You see I wants to be in da club :)

hahahaha you want to be a member. Frankly the walker is as big as i would ever think to shoot on a C&B. Its very heavy. its very impressive, shoots really good and is very accurate. but i just would not want to shoot anything bigger than that. At least not on a C&B.

I don't think I can get into crew-served, bench-rested cap 'n ball revolvers. For one thing, casting bocci balls down range isn't my idea of handgun shooting.

Scrat that Range Report was too much...ya gotta love it when that happens.
I'm still laughin my ass off!

Guys all the Pics are just great...this thread made my day.
How about a Long gun to add to a tall tale?

Gun started for Captain Ahab to bag his white whale. Ahab got bagged by Moby before he could return for his whale gun. The best thing about it, Herman Melville got to write a terrific story and become a nationally recognized writer (even though he flamed out after the Civil War).

I guess us guys will never change.....Always competing who got the biggest gun :D

OH MY LORD!!!! That's just not right.
You sure those are not Photoshopped?
Somehow I have a hard time believing that the guy can hold that in one hand with such an easy look on his face.

Now the second pic, those guns look awesome, I would definitely give those a try.

I have tried a S&W.500 once. Now although I believe that a Desert Eagle is a very practical and easy to fire weapon (contrary to most people's belief)
The .500 I can easily say is just overkill for anything. Although fun as hell. The recoil on it is something to be proud of. But if you were to hunt with it.......that's just cruel shooting things with that bullet :what:

Part of it is a camera trick -- close-up shot with a wide angle lens (look how big the guy's hand is)

Ive read that early Walker failure was due to the way thew conical bullets were loaded. It seems that the bullet would go in easier if the cone was inserted into the cylinder. When it was fired you had the same effect as a shape charge and the bullet was acting like the cone in a shape charge, trying to reverse its configeration.

Pardon my asking, but what does biggest have to do with anything?.....
Any ROA I've ever owned will do 1"/25yds with a preferred load, and the current favorite will do that with a ball over as much FFFFg as can be stuffed in the chamber, flattening balls at 50yds on deer?...and the ROA has never gotten tied up with ramrod dropping.....

1" groups at 25 yards with a .44 revolver loaded to chamber max. Now that's impressive. Sure wish I could shoot that well.
