So with all that's going on with COVID19 and ammo shortages, has anyone experienced less than normal folks at ranges?

The range I am a member of ran out of 9mm ammunition and has been waiting for restock going on 10 days now. Several times already I've gone to the range and have had the whole range to myself. No other shooters around. It initially feels cool, but after awhile It starts feeling a bit disconcerting.

Has anyone else noticed ranges being nearly empty?

CH

Not yet but will soon see tomorrow as I will be working a range as RO. We were finally about to run out of 9mm last Wed. Manager says if we cannot supply 9mm to out customers then we will loose about 40% of our business.

My range is easily twice as busy if not more. I used to be able to go on a weekday around lunch and have my pick of which range to have to myself (pistol, rimfire, benchrest). Now they've all got at least one or two people there already shooting.

The indoor range I go to is almost always packed. I'll wait 30 minutes before I can get a lane.

That's why I stopped going, just go to my brother's outdoor range at his place.

I'd go to an outdoor range over an indoor range any day of the week. I have noticed that the shots are much less pronounced. Indoors I always wear double hearing protection. But outdoors, I hardly notice the shooting. Unfortunately, Only indoor ranges are available nearby. Going to an outdoor range is ~1 hour driving time one way, which makes for a long day.

I normally go to my club during the week anyway in order to have the place to myself much of the time. That said, I have decreased my expenditures by 50% per session, and decreased my sessions from once a week to once every 2 weeks. So, my monthly expenditures are at 25% of what they were in 2019. In addition, I am doing more training with 22 LR (pistol and rifle) than before, since 22 LR is somewhat available at reasonable prices (for now). As far as overall range use by other members, the staff told me that is has dropped significantly (with the exception of gov't agencies). The primary demographic that has been most consistent in training are the long range folks who handload and had the foresight to insure they had ample components on hand.

I also have found that our indoor ranges are packed - though that is a relative term, as our indoor ranges have closed off every other lane for social distancing.

I personally have almost completely stopped live fire. For training I have gone back to wax bullets (I have lots of primers on hand). For fun/recreation I have switched entirely to my bows, which scratch essentially the same itch that firearms do, but cost close to nothing and do not use up components that I have no idea where to buy at this point.

I did work the 300yd outdoor range today and didn't see any let up. Now the 25yd pistol range was much quieter than usual aswas the 100yd range.

It is definitely slower at my club which is fine with me. I like having everything to myself or just one or two other people. Many people buy ammo as they need which obviously isn't working out well for them. Orientation for newbies is up which is concerning but I don't see them either. I go at least twice a week minimum.

Business at my local range/shop, which is a very popular place, appears to be mostly unaffected, even though they are only selling 9mm for rental guns. The range has indoor 100 yard rifle ranges, and those always seem pretty busy. The pistol bays are a bit less crowded. They still have a reasonable selection of handguns, and plenty of ammo in all calibers, but they are rationing their 9mm supply as mentioned. What I have noticed is a bit of a demographic shift- a lot more obviously new gun owners, families, and young adults with their older parents.

I too have a private range of my own, and that has seen a slight decline because of the concern over the current shortage of reloading supplies. While I shoot as often, I do shoot less rounds. seems to be the same with most folks I know. Those with hunting firearms are holding off shooting too much till after hunting season or till ammo supplies return.

my range has been closed since June 1 for scheduled repairs to berms. It will open up next Tuesday... and I expect it to be busy for a few days, then less so.

I am a member of an indoor range in the eastern outskirts of the DFW metroplex and have also noticed that the range is a little less busy than a few months ago. I do not mind having the range to myself, or almost to myself.

I had 37 good size orders last year alone from Target Sports. Was on track to do more than that this year. Great Company, pricing, fast shipping, packaged great and great CS. But they seem busted on product. I have a good supply of ammo and have been storing for years. When so many on this forum were saying how abundant 22.cal was, I just laughed and started ordering More each and every week, because I knew the end was coming soon on 22.cal as well.
I do not even check for any ammo any longer. Just not worth the hassle.
And doing very little shooting, just enough to keep my skills from eroding into the Dirt. Personally I believe all of my ammo will be needed in the near future for protection.

I started stocking years ago. Saw this crap coming and if anyone has been paying attention they would have read the many articles etc. that this was going to happen. And it really escalated during the Obama admin era. That should have been a huge flag of what was to become a norm like it is every single day now. I am a shooting enthusiast. Memberships at three different ranges. I use to shoot a minimum of once a week. Many times twice a week. I have been storing 9mm,380,357,38, and a lot of Buckshot. Same with 22.cal. I also knew it was BS that just because you reload, nothing would change. Primers, and components would go the way of every thing else. SHORTAGE.
I laughed back in April when people were saying that 22.cal was abundant. Man, I knew that nonsense would not last long and began buying as much 22.cal as I could afford and adding to my storage. I knew it would eventually be just like 9mm.

Now my range time is certainly not once a week (except Air Rifles and Pistols). I just do not go to the range but maybe once a month now. I know that every round shot is NOT replaceable. Once shot it is gone. And the carnage now is going to get worse and it will be years if ever that you will be able to buy ammo. My ranges are empty when I do go. Long time staff is gone etc.
I do go to the Outdoor range and on weekdays a few members but never very many. I shoot my Air Rifles and a half a box of 9mm to keep my skills up the best I can. I also shoot my Muzzle loader. Which is my new Hobby. (and I hav been stocking up on as much powder and bullets as I can affordably get.

Thankfully I have a number of air Pistols that keep me in shooting form. Now I shoot them about every other day. Trigger control, point and shoot skills stayed honed. And I do it in my Garage and Back yard.

All my ammo now is set aside for Defense. Laugh all you want. But being prepared is why many have ammo now and others scouring the internet looking for a box of 9mm or 22.cal.

On the weekends you need to make a reservation at the indoor ranges I go to. The outdoor range has been increasingly busy during the weekdays, especially the long range lanes.
I still shoot two or three times a week but have added more rifle sessions.

I am a member of a private range; last two visits, I was alone - very relaxing and quiet. I am now concentrating on my compound bow skills for deer season (opens Sept. 15th). Dove season opens Sept.1 - plenty of shotgun shell inventory for the hunt. Yes, presently there is an ammo concern and I do not get as much range time as before the supply collapse however, there is plenty of outdoor activity to keep me entertained - adapt and have fun.

Two months ago it was packed; 20 people at the range at the 10 am opening time waiting to get into the building that is now Covid-limited to 10 lanes.

Three weeks ago I was solo, having the place to myself until about 10:45 when another guy came in. I posted in another thread on this topic that it seemed like the folks had waited the 10-days to pick up their gun at the height of the initial panic-buying wave and were itching to shoot it... now ammo is lean or non-existent so they are either sitting on what they have or don’t have any more. (No internet ammo sales to adults over 21 without involving a FFL is truly gun prohibition at its finest. You can’t use it if you can’t feed it.)

Stay safe.

My favorite place is busier than it used to be. They can only use every other lane now so often there is people waiting out front for their turn. I am seeing a LOT more new shooters now. seems every week when I go there is at least one or two people who have never been to a range and many of them are standing there with a new gun they just bought. It does make it better for those waiting as most of the new people set up, shoot a couple boxes, and pick up and go so the next person can come in.

It is pretty much business as usual at my range. Every other bench on the rifle range was posted with a “ do not use” sign for about a month and then that went away. Now things are back to normal including usage. I went this morning and was there a little before sunup. I had the place to myself for about a half hour and then another early riser that I see pretty regularly showed up and then another came several minutes later and that was it. On the weekends it can get fairly crowded by late morning.

It is the only place available and is the local gun club. Pay your annual dues and use it when you wish. It’s out of town but on city opened land that is leased. The only amenity is restrooms and you need to check for skunks and black widow spiders as people just won’t close the doors just like they won’t pick up their range trash.

I was at the outdoor range twice this week. I had the whole place to myself both times but that's not unusual on a weekday. I've definitely cut back on how much ammo I shoot per trip. Even though I have a pretty good supply on hand and components to load more, I think this shortage is going to be a long time ending.

Reasonable prices is a relative term. I haven't been able to find .22 LR for less than about $50/500 rounds plus shipping and I won't pay that. I can reload 9mm for not much more.

A month ago my range was packed.
Now it’s either packed or empty depending on the time of day.
Trouble is I can’t figure out when it’s going to be light or when there’s a wait for a lane.
