Watching the news today. Two gang murders in London with guns. Newsreader was reading out emails from viewers on the subject and a couple got me very angry (well, not 'Oh dear lord, you just washed my 1972 Chevrolet Corvette with a bucket of rocks'-angry, but 'those people are complete idiots'-angry).
Anyway, one viewer said that kids arn't taught how dangerous drugs and guns are until they're in secondary school (that would be highschool on your side of the pond) and that they should be taught earlier. Well yes, kids should be taught about drugs and guns earlier but I think a parent taking their child out and teaching them to shoot safely or a teacher showing them how to use drugs safely and explaining the dangers/risks etc so they can make an informed decision would be a better idea (you may not agree with me on the drugs, but I think we'll all agree on the guns).
Well, that didn't get me so angry, what got me angry was: "The only way to solve gun crime is to increase the powers of police to stop and search".
'Stop and search' is a little phrase for when a police officer can, well, stop you and then search you. Usually you have to have a good reason to do this, like someone accusing you of stealing something. But there are some areas in cities where you can be stopped and searched randomly for no reason at all, and I believe there are other times they can do this, like before or after a football match. I'm not too up on it to be honest, I should really learn more but you get the idea.
Anyway, I was screaming at the TV for a couple of minutes after that, something about "maybe if the government and the damned thought police kept their noses out of people's business and maybe if people could actually protect themselves and maybe if we taught kids to be responsible we might not be in the mess we're in" except with a lot more expletives. The missus had to come and calm me down lol.
Anyway, rant over
