I got just got back from the range and shooting my new RAP 401 9mm.

Not much to tell that hasn't been said. I shot 150 rounds of S&B 9mm ammo and had no malfunctions of any sort. Not even a hint that it would jam.

I didn't really shoot for accuracy as I am just getting used to the gun and just breaking it in but it showed decent accuracy on the groups that I did shoot. I set up my targets at 15 yards. The first group was bad, maybe I was just not familier with the gun or it had oil in the bbl but it measured about 4-5" and it was high and left. Not what I was hoping for. All my other groups were far better, averaging about 2" and were more to POA. Every group got slightly smaller and in the end, I was putting all the shots through the same ragged 1 1/2" hole.

I think it and me will improve with practice but as it is, it is better than average and impressive for a gun of it's small size. It is not hard to find a full size 9mm pistol that won't shoot as good as the RAP.

Recoil is mild because of how heavy the gun is and the comfortable grips. I didn't even notice recoil until I thought about it. I had to think about it so I could tell people here. ;) I am not very sensitive to recoil so the best I can say is, I didn't notice anymore recoil from the RAP than any other 9mm I have shot. It feels like my Star Firestar, Ruger P95, Star B, or even the Beretta 92fs. My FM Browning Hi Power Detective has more recoil than the Rap 401.

The SA trigger was a little mushy and just a little hard to tell when it was going to break but that is more of a concern for target work and not defensive shooting. The DA trigger is too heavy for me but after dry firing last night and shooting today, it has smoothed up quite a bit. I had said it was gritty when I first got it but that seems to have solved itself.

All in all, it was boring. Nothing happend other than it put bullets down range when you pulled the trigger. I like that. I don't think it will be a jammer but it is too soon to really say. I think it makes a good gun for someone that doesn't mind the weight. A car gun or home defense gun seems like the best role for this gun. If you don't mind 2 lbs of steel on your belt, it is compact enough for a CCW.

Any RAP owners have a source of small parts for these that you'd like to post ?

It'd be a bummer to have one out of service over something like a broken extractor. :(

That is a good point! I need to find out who has spare parts for this gun. I wonder how many Astra A-75 parts will interchange with the RAP.

i think century arms or possibly your dealer will be able to set you up with parts, although one of the downfalls of this firearm is that lots of things are just a bit more difficult than having say a 1911. no custom holsters, harder to find spare parts, no stainless mag options, etc.

i don't think it's too heavy for CCW, for me at least. need a really good belt, though.

I don't know if they made any extra parts for sale and I'd buy up the mags while you still can. Bren

I contacted the dealer I got my RAP from and Century and they both said that they don't have any spare parts.:what:

They told me to contact Gun Parts Corp. if I needed them.

Does anyone know how close the RAP is to the Astra A-75? Are parts interchangable or just the mags? This is the downside of having a gun that is not really common. I think it will get better once more pistols are imported and sold but for now, the pickings are slim!

here's the website for gun parts corp
http://www.gunpartscorp.com/

as for common replacements, the most common thing replaced (except for mags) is the recoil spring, and I suspect any spring made for a 3 1/2" 9mm gun will work. personally, i'm not really worried, even though i put cheap ammo through it. if i get really screwed and the extractor breaks or something like that, i'll probably just go to a gunsmith and have one fitted to it. maybe i'm naive, but i don't envision breaking alot of parts on this gun.

Your probably right. This gun is built like a tank. The only thing that I see breaking would be some of the smaller parts like the firing pin, extractor, ect. A good gunsmith can make those parts if needed.

This gun doesn't seem like a prima donna, I think it will take a linking and keep on ticking. It is like the AK-47 of the compact 9mm world.:D

Has anyone had a jam with there RAP 401 yet? I haven't heard of one from the guys here that have them. I plan on putting 1000 rounds through my RAP before the end of summer. If it doesn't jam on me, I will pronounce it my new carry gun. It is slated to replace my Star Firestar but it has got to prove itself first.

firestar, will you change your name to rap401??
JR

I think you would even be hard pressed to break the extractor....take a look at it...that is a big chunk of steel.

Shot my Rap 401 again today. I had put locktite on the trigger pin that seemed loose before and it didn't move out any today while firing. The Astra mag springs seem a little stiffer than the factory mag spring. Fun Gun!
JR

BTW, I ordered an extra mag for the RAP and it came with a factory mag and not an Astra mag. I have heard that some come with Astra mags when you order extras.

I also ordered an extra mag with my RAP 401 and got a factory mag.

I'm glad you like your RAP. I've been extremely happy with mine! The only drawback I've found with mine is people who assume it's junk because of the low price. :fire: But letting them fire it a few rounds has changed their minds every time! :D

OTOH, the first time I had mine on the range the guy next to me asked me if it was a Sig! Pretty classy look for a $200 gun. I had posted some comparison pictures of my RAP and my Kahr K-40 Elite on TFL. Maybe I should have compared it to my P229 instead. BTW, the main reason that I compared the RAP to the Kahr was that it really FELT like the Kahr. The size, the weight, the grip, the length of pull... everything felt like the Kahr (except the trigger naturally.) Although the RAP probably compares better in function to the Sig with both being DA/SA w/decockers and the Kahr being DAO. All three fill about the same function and are fine guns despite being all over the price range.

Best of luck with yours! :D

The Astra 75 mags are stamped 9mm on one side and 40 S&W on the other side. Work great in my Rap 401.
Would these same mags work in the RAP 440?
JR

My brother has both a 440 and a 401. The mags are completely interchangable (in fact when shooting both, we had to be careful not to put 9's in the 40 and 40's in the 9 :what:

Zundfolge, Thanks for the mag information. Which do you like best, the 401 or 440? Seems like not too many people have shot the 440. Thanks again,
JR

Well I'm generaly a fan of the .40 (my current carry gun is a Kahr MK40 and I also have a Steyr M40), but frankly I liked the 401 slightly better then the 440 (of course the 401 was NIB and the 440 used to be the BUG for a cop before my brother bought it, so it wasn't pristine. The 401 still had the white goo in the sights).

The weight of the gun really soaks up the recoil from both calibers, so the 440 doesn't suffer from the nasty recoil some small .40s have.

I'd take either, and would be hard pressed to make a decision if I was given a choice between two of them in equal condition. I'm kind of leaning toward the 401 because there are more of them available and 9mm WWB at WalMart is cheap :)

Zund...I was faced with the same predicament when purchasing my RAP...I was leaning toward the 440 just because I didnt have a 40 caliber handgun, and this seemed like a cheap way to get one....However, when it came down to it, my fondness for 9mm took over, and I decided on the 401...

Plus, since I like to shoot my handguns so much, 9mm seems like a no brainer, because I can put 100 rounds a week through the gun, and not go broke doing so.

I have seen how seldom my brother shoots his Steyr M40 (due to cost) and I didnt want to fall into that same situation.

And it seems, that with the right loads, 9mm can be just as, if not more effective as 40 cal. (for SD purposes)

Walmart now has Winchester 100 round value packs in S&W 40 for $14.97. Still not as cheap as the 100 9mm packs but getting there. Haven't run any through my Steyr M40 yet so see how it shoots.
Would like to find a Rap 440 now that I have the 401.
JR

Suprised I hadn't run across this thread earlier :)

I reccomend buying a 440 if you can find one.. simply because it looks like the 401's are a little easier to come by.
And we all should have one of each :D

I bought them both simply because I wanted the 401 for target practice (9mm generally is cheaper) and I carry the 440.

Zundfolge didn't get a very good taste of the 440 because all I had was some cheap lead cone ammo (which I will never buy again.. FMJ for this guy from now on)

But I find they are very hard to distiguish between.

I just recently discovered I have been shooting with the wrong eye.
So I'll be going to the range very soon and I'll post an accuracy report on the 401. I may pick up a box of WWB in .40 and take them both.
