Now I'm thinking that when I get some disposable income I may need to invest in one of these (at least a Uberti knock-off). Not the most useful thing I could own, but cool as all hell!

And the Navy branded earlier Top break Replicas are the ones that were prone to issues, The current Uberti / Taylor's (#0855) one I have is still solid as a rock.

The early Navy Arms Schofields were made by ASM (Armi San Marco). Those are the ones that are troublesome and often do not work well. The ones produced by Uberti are fine.

DJ, next time out try lubing the pin on your Remington with Canola oil. It's all I use on my two Uberti guns and I can shoot a whole 6 CAS stages and even more without the cylinders binding up.

I only shoot my Remmies with cartridge conversion cylinders these days. I have to remove the cylinder to reload, part of the design. While the cylinder is out of the gun I give the front of the cylinder and the cylinder pin a quick wipe with a damp cloth. Does the trick. If I was shooting C&B, which does not require removing the cylinder, I would give your suggestion a try.

DJ, thank you for your very informative posts.

My BP revolver experience is limited to percussion guns. Of those, the Ruger Old Army and the Rogers & Spencer are the most resistant to BP fouling, due to their cylinders having the collar on the front of the cylinder which protects the base pin from fouling coming out of the barrel/cylinder gap.

Thanks for sharing that.
Exceptionally well written and documented.
Much better information than one would ever find in a modern gun rag!
And now I want a top break S&W even more!

Early replica models had the finger rest welded to the trigger guard leaving a visible line there. They could come loose. Later Uberties were hammer forged as one piece. Very drool-worthy pictures... thanks for sharing!

Do you know what ultimately replaced the S&W designs in the Russian Army & Calvary? The Belgian Nagant brothers design...

Yuck! Almost puke producing in comparison.
