what grain of bullet (.223 caliber) would be appropriate for a 1 in 12 twist, 26 inch barrel? (Remington XR-100 Rangemaster .223 Remington) Also, what would be a good match bullet to use (hornady, federal, etc.)

I thought a 1-14" topped out at 55. I thought a 1-12" went to 63gr. Thats the Infor I got form Shillen. For what is worth when i wa trying bullet for my XR-100 i bought some of the Midsouth Bargain bullets 50gr PSP and they shoot the best (turned in several 3 round groups or .3's at 100) dont have to go match everytime thats the beauty of rifles. just like people each have their own personality and likes and dislikes and sometime your pleasantly surprised

No, 55 and LOWER. Long heavy bullets need a fast twist. Short light bullets need a slow twist.

1-12" and 55gr is the median.

FYI, it won't hurt your barrel to try "non-optimal" bullet weights. Some people get lucky and find 1:12 barrels that stabilize 70gr bullets. You just never know. Try some 63s at 50yds. If you get crappy groups or keyholes, you know your barrel won't handle them.

revolver, you're probabaly correct, but are there any decent 60-63g match bullets? i guess there could be. i said 55g and lighter thinking about the plethora of quality 50g, 52g, 55g flat base match bullets and varmint bullets.

The 12" twist was adopted for M193 55 grain FMJ boattails in cold weather.

Rather than try to figure out what bullet weight (length) is theoretically optimum for the twist rate, use a proven load. I have had good to great accuracy from Sierra 52 grain Matchkings in everything from 9" to 14" twist .223 and .22-250 barrels.

not trying to beat a dead horse but mine has shot the SH** out of 62grain BTHP so i think this may be correct. i know most 22-250's are maxed out at 55 grain but they have a 1-12"

My Remington 700 VS composite barrel has a 1:12 twist. Surprisingly, it has turned in some of its best groups with 50gr Midway dogtown bullets but also shoots just fine with other 50, 52, and 55gr bullets. I tried some 69gr matchkings and groups do open up quite a bit. As mentioned above, it won't hurt anything to try a non optimal bullet, you just may or may not see good accuracy.
